friday finds

Oh, I have some good, good finds for you this week, friends. Shall we dive right in?

I spotted this little polka-dot baby over at Oh Joy, and fell for almost everything Made by Hank has to offer. If you’re in the market for a crossbody bag on a budget, look no further. madebyhank friday finds

I nabbed this sweet little Lulu Frost tortoise bracelet during J.Crew’s last 25% off special (not to be confused with their current 25% off special – code STYLE25 works on orders of $150+ through Sunday). When I got it, it was even more wonderful than I’d expected. This bad boy’s going to get some serious fall mileage.

Screen Shot 2012 09 28 at 8.42.36 AM friday findsI read about this over at Creature Comforts: looks like artist Hannah Evelyn Rowlands is doing some serious good for a puppy shelter in her area. For just under $20 (USD), she’ll sketch your dog, and all of the proceeds go to her local dog shelter. What are you waiting for?

A dear friend of mine is a human rights attorney who’s chosen to spend her life living in some very raw corners of the world, protecting people who sorely need protection. She just left Cambodia to start a new position in Thailand. In addition to being an amazing human being, she is a fantastic photographer and has some serious style. If you’re into the colors and flavors of exotic travel, you’d do well to follow her amazing blog, Anchors Adrift.

And of course, I can’t go without leaving you my Pinterest pick of the week. It’s been a busy week of pinning for me, so this was no easy feat. But I think my favorite of the week is this amazing shot of someone who’s styled oxblood so perfectly, there’s literally no room for improvement. I want every single thing on her bod.

all in the details: kelly wearstler perforated quartz ring

Kate M.W. ~ I’ve still got Fashion Week brewing in the back of my head, and while the runways may have been looking forward to spring, September + Fashion Week always equates chic fall ensembles of grey and black in my mind. Because it’s all happening in New York, I’ll add a dose of “polished edge” – which is precisely what I thought when I saw this ring by Kelly Wearstler. There’s something industrial about the gunmetal setting, but light and crisp about the clear quartz.

Perforated Quartz Ring, Kelly Wearstler, $145

This fall, the fashion world is revolving around the deep toned colour of oxblood (or bordeaux, or maroon…), but instead of sporting it in coloured or coated denim, I’ve opted for a sleek rolled sleeve shirt. Maroon and grey are the stars of the narrative this week, so while I’m always an advocate of your favourite dark wash skinny jeans – try swapping them in for a worn-in slate tone. They’re equally as versatile as traditional indigo or black (pairing with all nearly all neutrals) but just ever so slightly unexpected.

Grey Carnelian Always Skinny Jeans, Gap, $70 / Roll Sleeve Shirt, Calvin Klein, $78 / Mid-Rise Always Skinny Jeans, Gap, $70

Building off of the colour palette inspired by the ring, I’ve kept the rest of the details humming along in perfect pitch. An oversized men’s gunmetal watch grounds a classic ensemble but plays off the hard industrial tone of the ring, and the small sparkling studs bring in just a touch of femininity. Both tie in edgy studded smoking loafers. Stuck with your indigo skinnies? Add a patterned grey scarf. Opted for grey? Emphasize solid neutrals with a simple black scarf. Either way, keep the overcast colours consistent with the bag – I like this particular selection as the python print and shape are just ladylike enough, and the leather trim brings in the oxblood colour. And since your focal point is a ring, be sure to paint your digits! Stick with the narrative in a chimney soot grey, or set off the grey/gold combination and contrast the bordeaux top with a green-toned deep gold.

This week’s equation? Polished edge + gunmetal + oxblood = a chic and ever so slightly industrial ensemble that’s all in the details.

currently coveting: lillybee fall 2012

My sweet friends at Lillybee just launched their Fall 2012 collection (and a brand new website!), and let me tell you, there is some serious coveting going on up in here.

lillybee fw12 currently coveting: lillybee fall 2012

Left to right, from top: Anita, $228 / Hazel, $188 / Veda, $118 / Shania, $278 / Tammy, $228

And there’s so, so much more where those came from! I’ve already nabbed those purple calf hair loafers…how could I resist? But I’m wondering if I shouldn’t have treated myself to the laser-cut Western booties too. So, so chic!

One of my favorite things about Lillybee is that it’s a collection that’s designed to actually be worn. Translation: comfy heels, low wedges, flats…these are all shoes that are beautiful and fashion-forward, but you can wear them in the real world. That probably shouldn’t be a niche market, but it so is. Particularly if you’re a corporate gal, Lillybee is a line you should be spending some serious time with. Designer Kassie Rempel is a DC-area native who also owns one of the District’s cult favorite shoe boutiques, so she knows a thing or two about creating shoes for powerhouse women (including herself!).

So now, the really pressing question is this: have you picked a favorite?

travel in style: the NYT 36 hours

36 hrs travel in style: the NYT 36 hours

You know those “36 Hours” travel columns you’ve been saving from the New York Times for years? The ones that are stuffed away in a folder somewhere, shredded at the corners, turning yellow and brittle, but you couldn’t throw them out because you were dreaming of the day they’d be stuffed in a suitcase, ready to take you on a perfectly-guided weekend trip?

Toss them! The NYT teamed up with Taschen to reprint the best 150 of them into what might just be my favorite travel book ever (well, perhaps the second best, followed only by Taschen’s Paris): The New York Times 36 hours. It has photos, pinpointed maps, restaurants, hotels, shopping, museums…but only the best of the best, so you don’t waste your time wondering which historical site is a must-see. It’s the perfect antidote to those overstuffed, overwhelming two-hundred-page guidebooks you typically buy for a weekend trip.

The book is broken up by geographical quadrant, so you can thumb through, say, the Southwest and decide whether to hit Scottsdale or Santa Fe. Once you’ve made up your mind? Photocopy a few pages (a much better fit for your crossbody travel bag anyway), and you’re set. It also makes for pretty wonderful imaginary trips…you can picture yourself strolling down the cobble-stoned streets of Boston or the waterfront of Seattle, and there are just enough photos to make it sufficiently tantalizing for mental travel.

Nab it now…and pick up an extra while you’re at it. Something tells me this will be a no-brainer holiday gift for at least 3 people on your list.

get gifting: the best guest

{Editor’s Note: Our new Gift Gal, Jennefer, is at it again with a pile of handy ideas for the ultimate hostess gift. File this one away under things you’ll need before you know it (especially with holiday parties just around the corner), or be super organized and buy a few now to stash away.}

Jennefer T. ~ You get invited to a friend’s house for dinner…or better yet, to spend the weekend at their mansion in the Hamptons complete with a pool boy that looks like Channing Tatum who is ready, willing and able to serve you mojitos as you relax to the sounds of the nearby ocean. Wait, where was I? Right. You get invited to a friend’s house for dinner. You know it is polite to bring a hostess gift but have zero time to get this done, which means you’re about to default to the standard, totally predictable bottle of wine.

Never fear, your Gift Gal is here. The key is foresight. You are a popular girl. You know you will be invited to a number of parties and dinners throughout the year. So, plan ahead. Order or buy hostess gifts as you see them and keep them in a little drawer (or if you are like me, a closet) for “gift emergencies”.

Motivated? I hope so because I have some creative hostess ideas for you to jump on right now.

hostess get gifting: the best guest

No. 1: Gin and Titonic Ice Cube Tray, $10 / Zoku Duo Quick Pop Maker, $37 / Alessi Corkscrew, $50;
No. 2: Ice Cream Press, $14 / Barefoot Contessa How Easy Is That?, $20 / Baked, $30 / Artist Palette Cheese Plate, $30;
No. 3: Bananagrams, $15 / Catchphrase, $27 / Glee Karaoke Revolution,$16

No. 1: I’ll drink to that. Let’s start with my favorite gift (and topic): booze. The difference between showing up with a bottle of liquor and a memorable hostess gift is quirk. If you are going to bring a bottle of gin, make sure you bring a Gin and Titonic ice cube tray to go along with it. Don’t just bring champagne and orange juice to brunch, partner it with the Zoku Quick Pop Maker and help your hostess make mimosa popsicles. If you must stick with the traditional bottle of wine, bring along a cute corkscrew to go with it. My favorite is by Alessi, but you can easily find a less expensive one.

No. 2: Dessert first. If you are headed to Robert Downey Jr’s house and want to steer clear of gifting alcohol, there are plenty of charming food-related gifts to try. My personal favorite, mostly because it gives me an excuse to immediately chow down on ice cream, is a mini ice cream sandwich press with the accompaniments. Or, wrap up a cookbook they can use the next time they have you over. If I didn’t love my mom so much, I would be buying the next bus ticket to New York to see if Ina Garten, aka the Barefood Contessa, would adopt me. I also routinely use Baked from the eponymous bakery in Brooklyn. Even for a mediocre baker, their recipes always seem to turn out. And if all else fails, a serving dish that can be put to immediate use is a great gift. Fish’s Eddy is the best dish shop in all the world. I suggest buying their Artist Palette Cheese Tray in bulk.

No. 3: Crowd Pleaser. Bringing an activity can sometimes be a lifesaver, especially when a dinner party veers into the “I’ve heard this story 1,000 times” territory. Because I am addicted to Words with Friends, I always bring Bananagrams, which is speed Scrabble on steroids. Catchphrase is another goodie, especially when you pit couples against each other. Or, if you really want to throw down (and have had a few drinks), there is nothing like karaoke. Assuming your friend has a Wii, Glee Karaoke Revolution is my hands-down favorite but that is because I am a total Gleek – any Karaoke Revolution will do.

What is your go-to hostess gift? I am always on the lookout for new ideas. And if you’re stumped for an upcoming gift-giving occasion, leave a comment and it could be the subject of my next post. I love a challenge!

trend to try: boho glam

{Editor’s Note: Erin’s back with a look at one of the trickiest trends there is: boho. How to pull it off without looking like a hippie schlub? It’s a tricky business. The key is to glam it up and be wary of proportions, and Erin’s got a can’t-miss strategy to make it work for anyone…yes, even you.}

runway inspired trend to try: boho glam

Erin ~ The bohemian, free-spirited look is shown so often that it has become less of a trend and more of a type of style. However, this season has a little twist on the classic flower child look. It’s a little less Woodstock and a little more wealthy gypsy with a dash of urban sophistication. The look is characterized by rich leather, fur (faux or real), layers of luxe fabrics, and gold accessories. This is definitely a look for maximalists, so don’t be shy with the layers or the accessories!

For the weekend, start with a maxi dress in an autumnal palette. This is a great way to stretch your wardrobe and bring some of those summer sundresses into fall. A long necklace and patterned scarf bring in a bit of happy chaos to give that bohemian feel. Heeled booties lend the outfit a bit of urban edge and the tweed blazer adds polish and texture to make the look feel current.

boho day trend to try: boho glamModern Lit Lecturer Blazer, Modcloth, $45 / Harness Heel Boot, Dolcetta by Dolce Vita, $98 / Plaid Shirt Scarf, Free People, $48 / Crystal Spear Necklace, Alexis Bittar, $155 / Paisley Maxi Dress, Eighty Sixty, $99

To take the boho look from 9 to 5, try pairing contrasting textures of rich fabrics. Gold jacquard pants contrast with a silky blouse, and the small diamond pattern plays well with a simple feather print, creating a harmonious mix of textures and patterns. Layer a black vest and bangles over everything to bring the outfit together and add an extra dose of boho cool. I personally love the look of cropped pants over a calf height boot or ankle booties, but this look would work equally well with a wedge heel or a classic black pump.

boho work trend to try: boho glamDarling Elizabeth Tunic, ASOS, $60 / Trinity Gold Jacquard Cigarette Pants, Reiss, $265 / Mighty Black Leather Zip Boots, Topshop, $90 / Sleeveless Wool Vest, Lord & Taylor, $60 / Art Deco Bangles, Tinley Road, $18

Lastly, for a night out, pair a jewel-tone dress (merlot is particularly on trend for fall) with a fur vest. A pair of chandelier earrings adds a touch of gypsy glimmer; after all, it is a girls’ night out. Tassels and fringe are standard for a boho look, but instead of a predictable pair of fringe boots or a bag, add just a touch with a tasseled skinny belt and keep the boots classic for a more sophisticated look.

boho night trend to try: boho glam
Tassle Hem Faux Fur Gilet, Topshop, $110 / Timber Jersey Dress, French Connection, $138 / Emina Boot, Libby Edelman, $127 / Gala Chandelier Earring, Banana Republic, $45 / Skinny Waist Belt with Tassel, BCBGeneration, $24

This trend is a great way to get some extra mileage from your closet by making unexpected pairings. Mix glamorous, special pieces with your casual weekend wear, mix patterns and textures, combine floaty summer pieces with heavier fall clothes, and when in doubt, always layer on one more thing!

beauty buzz: everything you ever wanted to know about serums

First, let me confess a bias: I love serums. Love them. I think they’re the secret to amazing skin. (Well, that and strategic exfoliation, but that’s another story for another time.) But whenever I start exclaiming to one woman or another about the wonders of a great serum, they look at me blankly. “Serum?”, they say. “What’s the point?”

The point, friends, is this: Serums are a magic potion of super-potent, maximum-strength ingredients that are delivered to your skin in their purest form. No moisturizers, SPFs or tint to muck up the medicine. It goes on when your face is its cleanest state – post-wash at night, post-shower in the morning – so your skin is ready and able to drink up every last drop of goodness your serum has to offer. Though it can be an investment (some are upwards of $200), you only use 3-5 drops at a time, so a bottle lasts a long time.

A great serum might not have overnight-wonder potential. It might work slowly over weeks, or even months. But the net result, without fail, is happier, healthier, prettier, glow-ier skin. If you’re not using one, read on…I’ll convince you. If you are…I’m betting I’ll get you to switch brands.

If you really want to confuse yourself, stop into Sephora sometime and tell them you want a serum. There are literally hundreds of options, and even a serum evangelist like me doesn’t fully understand what they all do. But I’m nothing if not curious. So, I sent out a note to all of my favorite brands – and some brands I knew nothing about – and told them I wanted to test them all. And friends, I’ve been testing more than 40 different serums for the last two months (head over to Instagram @shoppingsmycardio if you want to see my bathroom counter as proof). I tried the good, the bad, and the meh, and was left with the greatest. Let me introduce the SMC Serum Dream Team:

serums beauty buzz: everything you ever wanted to know about serums

Obviously, you’re not going out and buying all 7 of these. So, how about a handy-dandy serum decoder?

If your skin needs:

  • Moisture: Caudalie Vinosource SOS Thirst Quenching Serum ($48). I’ve been a longtime devotee of Caudalie’s Radiance Serum for so long, I should own stock. Their magic is based on grapeseeds, and you know how healthy those are. This newest version is designed to give your skin a serious does of moisture, which is perfect for this time of year. My parched skin was much happier almost instantly.
  • Fine line reduction: Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Supplement ($67). You know I love Bobbi for cosmetics, but this serum still wowed me with its instant line reduction power. It gives the effect of candlelight, or a soft-focus lens, blurring out those fine lines until they’re barely visible. And it has more of that grape extract I love, so there’s moisture coming your way as well.
  • Redness reduction: Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution ($50). For me, the jury’s still out on whether dark spot reduction is really possible. But redness reduction and a general evening of skin tone definitely is, and this Kiehl’s serum does it…without added brighteners to trick your eye.
  • All of the above: Nude Skincare Cellular Renewal Serum ($82). One of my “wow” tests, Nude’s serum delivered on brightness, moisture, line reduction and skin tone evening. Some of it was smoke-and-mirrors (ie, temporary brighteners and tighteners), since the effect was so immediate, but some mornings, smoke and mirrors are just fine. I’m optimistic that the lasting effects will match up. {Be aware: multi-tasking is great, but the more things a serum can do, the less intense the results will be in any one area. If you have one specific goal, like redness-reducing, you’ll get more bang-for-your-buck by choosing a one-trick serum than a multi-tasker like this.}
  • Prevention/Repair: SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic ($152). One of these days, I want to do an interview with the skin experts at SkinCeuticals. I don’t always understand what everything does (ah, science), but I never, ever doubt that their products mean business. C E Ferulic delivers Vitamins C & E directly to your skin, and essentially works to amp up your skin’s resistance to UV damage (by 8x, they say). It also stimulates collagen production, so your skin will get more supple and toned, and show less fine lines over time. This one’s a slow-actor, but if you’re looking for serious medicine, it’s the one.
  • Healthy glow: Peter Thomas Roth Laser-Free Resurfacer ($75). PTR always delivers great products, but when I pumped this out of the bottle and got a blood-red serum, I was skeptical (and a little weirded out). The red comes from the dragon’s blood complex they use (no, really). Don’t fear, the color dissipates, and you’re left with a fantastically warm, glowy complexion, like you spent a morning out on the plantation sipping sweet tea. {PS: If you’re curious about this one, this set from Nordstrom is an amazing deal – full-size serum, plus their unbelievable gel moisturizer and an exfoliator for the price of the serum. Do it.}
  • Bargain Find: Juice Beauty Antioxidant Serum ($45). Now mind you, that’s $45 for two ounces…most of these brands only give you one. I’ve been a Juice Beauty fan since before I was a blogger – it’s just good, clean stuff that makes your skin happy. This serum feels amazing on your skin, and is so packed with healthy, organic ingredients, you just know it’s doing good things. Try it for a month, and see if your skin isn’t happier. I dare you.

So, tell me…have I made a serum convert out of you? I’m dying to hear! Can I answer any questions?
