Erin ~ One of the quirkiest trends to come from the runways this season is the animal print sweater. I personally love this trend since all through middle school I was that girl with the horse sweatshirt. It was purple. It was bedazzled. And yes, it said “I love ponies” in script on the bottom. It was amazing. I’m just glad to see that designers this season apparently have the same fond memories of animal sweaters that I do!

But how do you wear this trend when you’re closer to forty than fourteen?

Having a dash of humor and a lot of class is the fool-proof way to pull off an animal print sweater. These sweaters are inherently casual, which makes them a no-brainer addition to a relaxed weekend outfit. Throw one on over your favorite skinny jeans. Then add a pair of rugged boots to kick around in and layer it with a cute and functional puffer vest for a fun tweak on the classic weekend casual formula.

Knitted Hood Gilet, Topshop, $110 / Boxer Bootie, Lucky Brand, $105 / Bunny Graphic Sweater, Forever 21, $23 / 524 Skinny Jeans, Levi’s, $46 / Rose Gold Stella Watch, Fossil, $125

My favorite way to wear this trend is to dress it up, as inspired by Altuzarra. A pencil skirt and button down layered under the sweater are classic prep, but the Frenchie print adds a touch of humor. A pair of burgundy patent loafer pumps and a simple gold necklace are classic finishing touches with a twist. The classic preppy base of this outfit makes it perfect for a casual office setting.

Gold Twinkle Collar, Baublebar, $28 / ‘Analisa’ Pump, Sole Society, $60 / Perfect Shirt, Gap, $50 / Lace Pencil Skirt, The Limited, $70 / Frenchie Sweater , J. Crew, $98

Here’s another casual outfit which plays with high and low. Pair a very casual sweatshirt (love the vintage polo pony print!) with a dressier chiffon full length skirt. Ballet flats and a denim jacket keep the look firmly placed in the casual category, and make this a super comfy outfit for running errands or meeting up with friends.

Ashley Bow Ballet Flat, Banana Republic, $98 / Denim Jacket, Old Navy, $35 / Hooded Knit Scarf, Denada, $98 / Chiffon Full Length Skirt, American Apparel, $58 / ‘Polo Pony’ Graphic Sweatshirt, Wild Fox, $136

I love the fact that something as cozy and playful as a graphic sweater is one of the hottest trends this season, and I aim to take full advantage of it! Don’t you love when fashion and comfort coincide? So pick your favorite animal, and throw it on to add a bit of a wink and a nudge to any ensemble.
