Erin ~ Winter is not my season. As soon as that cold weather blows in, you can barely see me under the layers of sweaters, coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. So a trend that is both stylish and warm? Sign me up. The oversized trend from Fall 2012’s runways can look architectural and very “model off-duty”, while allowing you to layer a few extra sweaters underneath to combat the cold.

Of course, the runway looks are incredibly theatrical and larger than life. So how do you wear this trend without looking like you just bought the wrong size or are impersonating the Michelin Man?

One of the most popular versions of the trend is an oversized jacket or coat. An oversized piece always comes off as a little haphazard, and it’s a fine line between appearing sloppy and looking laid-back. One way to balance out the volume is for the rest of your outfit to be very polished. A classic jersey dress shows off your figure with a defined waist and a little leg, while the bright booties and oversized enamel necklace keep it fun.

Scalloped Short Necklace, Kate Spade, $148 / Lois Coat, Reiss, $310

Showing a little skin and highlighting your figure is a foolproof way to balance out an oversized piece. Pair slouchy trousers with a bustier top, and the structured top will show off your figure, while providing an unexpectedly sexy flash of skin. The peplum is a personal choice, but I love the drama. Also, since the point on your body where fitted and oversized meet draws attention, it will show off a svelte waist as well.

Shirley Bow Clutch, Z Spoke by Zac Posen, $245 / Quella Platform Pumps, Joan & David, $175 / Elsie Wide Leg Herringbone Pants, T Tahari, $71 / Twill Bustier, Rachel Roy, $89 / Double Sunburst Pavé Necklace, House of Harlow, $81

A very comfy casual take on the oversized trend is the classic oversized sweater and leggings outfit. This look is my go-to weekend uniform for a good reason. It’s one of those outfits that looks like I put in some effort when in fact it’s a miracle that I even remembered to brush my teeth. ‘Tis the season for an effortless uniform, and ladies, this is it.

Gold Pavé Slice Stud Earrings , Michael Kors, $75 / Disco City Bag, Foley + Corinna, $198 / Cece Cap Toe Ballet Flats, J.Crew, $168 / Rocha Cowl-neck Sweater, BCBG, $268 (or on sale here) / Leggings with Velvet Tux Stripe, Lysse, $78

One last tip: although models can get away with buying something three sizes too big and calling it oversized, us mere mortals should stick with buying clothing that are intentionally oversized. How can you tell? On jackets and tops make sure that the shoulder seam lines up with your actual shoulder and on pants the waist band should fit snugly, even if the garment is cut loose everywhere else.
