gift guide: woonwinkel’s finds for the modern family

{Editor’s Note: This gift guide was sponsored by my friends at Woonwinkel, but the picks are entirely mine. Thank you so much for supporting the businesses that support SMC!} family gifts

You remember Woonwinkel, right? That gorgeously modern home and accessories store in Portland (and online), filled with treasures I don’t see anywhere else – which, in my line of work, is really saying something. Every year, they’re one of my first stops for gifts, and one of the first places I look to fill out my own wish list. So, when they asked if I’d like to come up with a few gift picks from their store and share them with you? You can imagine how long it took me to agree.

The thing that always surprises me about Woonwinkel is how affordable most of their pieces are. Sure, you can splurge, but if you check out this list, you’ll see that nearly everything I’ve picked is under $60 – definitely a steal in gifting parlance. Plus, they really do have something for the whole family, so you can get your shopping done in one spot – and support a home-grown business while you’re at it! And PS: if anyone’s looking for a gift for me, that iPhone case and the brass paperweights are just my size. Ooh, and the ostrich pillow…

  1. My husband is obsessed with flashlights, and I know he can’t be the only one. This would be so much more stylish than the Maglites scattered all over my house. Areaware beechwood torch flashlight, $48
  2. Guys are suckers for clean and simple engineering. The fact that these are also gorgeous to look at? Well, that’s a gift for you. I’d pair this with a six-pack from a local microbrewery. Futagami brass bottle openers, from $48
  3. One of those perfect necklaces that’s a statement without being too much, so it’s an easy piece to give just about anyone. But if you give it to your mom, she’ll have to let you borrow it. Five Points necklace, $60
  4. I am perpetually in search of the coolest iPhone case I can find, and this one’s a winner. Bright, cheery and utterly original, I’m hoping it finds its way under my tree. Britt Bass iPhone 5 case, $36
  5. This beautiful set of blocks can be combined in infinite variations to make an endless number of silly faces – so fun, I might even be tempted to play along. Miller Goodman FaceMaker block set, $45
  6. Sure…this one’s just for “kids”. I’m pretending I don’t desperately want one of these awesome creatures living on my couch. Donna Wilson’s knit creatures, from $48
  7. Perfect for kids who are into puzzles, this book of animals morphs into a menagerie of assemble-it-yourself 3D critters. Guaranteed to keep them quiet for…well, at least an hour or two. Totem Book of Animals, $32
  8. Trivets are one of those things everyone needs, but no one wants to buy for themselves. This one is so modern and graphic, I’d be tempted to keep it on the table 24/7. Molly M laser-cut trivet, $30
  9. Listen, who couldn’t stand to add a little cheek to their decor? This adorably cranky ostrich would work in just about any room, and it’ll make the whole family smile all year long. Nell and Mary ostrich pillow, $64
  10. Just the thing when the whole family piles onto the couch for movie night. Throw in a family-friendly flick, and you’ve got your sister’s family covered. Hay Mega-Knit wool blanket, $289
  11. If you have a green thumb on your list (or are willing to get them started with a few succulents), this is a fantastic gift for that impossible-to-buy-for person. Caravan Pacific Deca planter, $36
  12. Speaking of impossible-to-buy-for people…if the planter’s not a fit, these beautiful paperweights are. I can only describe these as irresistibly tactile – perfect to fidget with at your desk, because it’s certifiably impossible to keep your hands off. Futagami brass paperweights, $60
