make over my house: the couch reveal

Last week, I told you all about the fun I had ordering my brand spanking new Sofa.com sofa. (Do I have to call it a sofa instead of a couch if it came from Sofa.com? Inquiring minds…) And then I left you to spend the week guessing what I ordered. The only problem with that strategy? You had such great ideas, it had me second-guessing my pick! “Ooh, she’s right…the Bluebell in tweed would have been amazing!” Ah, the plight of the indecisive.

Despite all my waffling, I’m happy as a clam with my new sofa. Can I get a drumroll, please…..?

make over my house: my sofa.com experience

Friends, remember that colossal house redesign I showed you all a few months back? While we were working on the plan, our designer implored us – begged, even – to get a new sofa. She wanted a bit of warmth and color, she thought the scale was wrong, yada yada yada. But I nixed it for budgetary reasons. Real world design realities, y’all.

So, when I got an email from Sofa.com inviting me to try out their utterly gorgeous sofas, and have their help in custom designing one for my living room? You can imagine how quickly I hit “reply”. Based in London, Sofa.com just opened a new showroom in NYC and now delivers across the US. They make the most gorgeous, custom sofas in all sorts of comfy, modern shapes, with a “Hey, buying a sofa should be fun!” attitude I couldn’t resist.

To get started, I spent roughly a million hours on their website, perusing all of the designs, fabrics, and trying out every possible combination. Then, I ordered my “comfy pack” (okay, there may have been three comfy packs) – the most adorable collection of swatches ever to arrive at my door. Read on

earth day: the occasional environmentalist

Happy Earth Day, friends! (Or Earth Day, Observed, at least.) Since you know I’m all about living the green lifestyle, doing everything I can to curb excess waste and…

Yeah, not so much. You could look pretty hard before finding someone less environmentally-inclined than I am. If I’m honest, I barely recycle. I never carry those reuseable totes for grocery shopping (though I have about 967 of them spilling out of my hall closet). And last night, I put some old medications right in the garbage can. I know, I’m going straight to hell.

But. Every now and then, I see a little something I could do to be better. Nothing drastic, just a little nudge of environmental altruism, without going too far out of my way. And hey, in those rare instances, when I get to pat myself on the back for all the polar bears I’m saving? I’m totally an activist. Read on

friday finds

Happy Friday, friends! I’m feeling kind of thoughtfully, intentionally slow this spring morning, so I hope you’ll forgive a little brain wandering in today’s FF.

First things first: let’s talk deals. I happen to know that Kate SpadeVince and Cole Haan are all having their Friends & Family promos this weekend, and they’re doozies. I have all the details up on my Facebook and Twitter feeds…so much easier to keep you updated on all the best steals in real time. Read on

now shop this: leif

I honestly can’t remember where or how I stumbled across Leif, a brilliantly-curated little den of lovelies based in Brooklyn. But honestly. Take a look, and just try to tell me it isn’t love at first sight.

The real trouble? It’s all a steal. Truly! In fact, everything is so downright reasonable, so completely, utterly treat-yourself-able, I predict you’ll have a shopping cart full of goodies before you know what’s happened. Do me a favor, and don’t censor that urge too terribly much. We all deserve a sweet little surprise in our mailbox every now and then, don’t we?

tech savvy: logitech ue mobile boombox

Working from home can be a solitary life, friends. Sure, I chat with you all day on Twitter, share snaps of my splurges (and my cutie dog) on Instagram and generally try to make it out for my daily cappuccino, but it gets a little quiet around Casa SMC from time to time. Plus, hey, sometimes a girl just needs to bust a little Britney Spears to get through a pile of laundry, am I right?

Alas, the highly-complicated tech setup The Hubs has installed makes it a 10-step process to tune in to my tunes (despite him repeatedly telling me how “easy” it is). So, I went in search of an option. I wanted small, easy, wireless, and – obviously – chic. Read on

eye candy: comma workshop quilts

{Before I forget, do you want to know which of those beautiful blue bags made it onto my arm? Check out my sweet new lovely on Instagram!}

I’m a quilt lover from way, way back. My grandmother made them for me from the time I was a wee thing, so I have a longstanding appreciation for the art, skill and work that goes into making one. When I got an email from Kerry, the mastermind behind Comma Workshop‘s stunning quilts, my jaw fell flat on the ground.

Each one can be customized with colors, names, or even a whole piece of prose or poetry, or you can go with the truly inspired words from Kerry or one of a few talented creative writers she works with. Can you imagine what a divine baby gift this would make? Or even better, can you imagine how stunning this would be on my bed?

I’m madly partial to the Aspens quilt, but Joy is a very, very close second. Do you have a favorite?

PS: You can take 20% off any of Comma Workshop’s goodies through tomorrow (2.5) with code WHITE.

a little inspiration, and your very own printable!

Not long ago, I was doing my best to catch up on my RSS feed (all 900+ articles, thank you), and something Garance Doré had to say stopped me in my tracks. She was talking about her plans for the new year – resolutions and such – and somewhere in the midst of a ramble I couldn’t totally make sense of, she repeated something a professor of hers had once told her:
