And so, your Great Big List of all of the Memorial Day sales worth mentioning is right here, but I’m starting it off with my faves – aka, the ones I’ll actually be shopping and which you might not have heard about yet. think(ing) pink
I’ve been thinking pink in a big way this season…it’s always a favorite color of mine, and though pink for spring is a little predictable, all that talk about winter pastels put me over the edge. But not just any pink will do – no cotton candy or fuchsia here. I’m after a more subtle shade – a pale, whisper of a pink that you’d find on the inside of a seashell, the one that’s like a nude but infinitely warmer and universally flattering. A little something like this:
asked and answered: what to wear to that holiday party
Some of you told me you’d be curious about my advice for holiday party attire. And, since this is officially the week for holiday parties and I know I’m you’re fretting about what to wear, I thought I’d pass on some of my favorite “rules of thumb” for holiday party outfits. Read on
gift guide: laurie jesch-kulseth’s finds for the master chef
{Editor’s Note: This year, I’ve asked a few of the people whose style I spend all year admiring to share their holiday wish lists. Stay tuned – we’ll have a new expert every day for the next two weeks!} gift guide foodie
If you’ve been reading SMC for any length of time (hurray!), you’ll have noticed that if there’s one thing I love as much as shopping, it’s food. I have too many a fair number of food blogs on my reading list, but I love none better than Laurie Jesch-Kulseth’s Relishing It. If you’re in need of a food blog that doesn’t give you pangs of anxiety, Laurie is definitely the lady you’re looking for. All of the talent with none of the hype, Laurie’s recipes are creative but approachable, her writing is full of helpful ideas, and not once have I made something of hers that didn’t turn out to be completely delicious. Plus, I’m a sucker for a little Midwestern charm, which Laurie has in spades. This is a girl who knows her way around the kitchen. Who better to help you pick the perfect gift for the finicky foodie on your list?

all in the details: holiday party perfection
Kate M.W. ~ A basic black dress is always lauded as the classic necessity in a woman’s wardrobe. “It’s so versatile and you can dress it up with accessories!” If we’ve all heard this once, we’ve heard it a hundred times. So when I was considering how to put a bit of holiday party spirit into All in the Details, I must confess…this week started first by staring at a plain black shift dress. My favourite thing to pair with that is a sparkling statement necklace, and from there, the choice was easy. Subtle but packing a punch, metallic and glistening but not ostentatious. Statement necklace perfection.
sale spy: mastering clearance stores
Editor’s Note: My helpful hints today on iVillage are all about navigating Black Friday – when to dive in, when to bow out, and how to prep for battle. In that spirit, I thought I’d have our Sale Spy, Roxanna, give you some tips on my retail Achilles’ heel: the clearance store! I have yet to master these bargain bastions, but now that I have her tricks in hand, I just may give it another try!
Sale Spy’s picks: Leather Combo Blazer, Cut 25, $346.99 (reduced from $495) / Crossbody bag, Steve by Steve Madden, $46.80 (reduced from $78) / Medici Coat, Anthropologie, $149.95 (reduced from $298)
Roxanna K.K. ~ Everyone can shop in ritzy boutiques. With their racks of carefully edited merchandise and judicious use of white space, they’re a piece of cake. But only die-hard sale hounds can shop at clear-out retailers like Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack and TJ Maxx. This is where you become a shopping ninja.
Now I know many people are overwhelmed and intimidated by these stores – the unending racks of jumbled up merchandise shoved together like sardines, the fluorescent lighting, the nonexistent service. But trust me – there are amazing deals to be found here, people. It just takes a little courage and a lot of chutzpah. Luckily you have your trusty Sale Spy to guide you through the process so that you, too, can score the best finds without developing a migraine in the process:
