weekend report: oh, how i love a sample sale…

i spent my sunday in berkeley, checking out the outstanding wares of three of my favorite potters, all of whom teamed up to throw the mother of all sales this weekend. i had so much fun, and actually got to meet all of the designers, which was possibly even more exciting than seeing their gorgeous work in person. they were every bit as delightful as i’d expected.

i picked up a stunning teapot by whitney smith, and a gorgeous bowl for my mom for mother’s day. it was sheer torture to leave behind a diana fayt platter that captured my heart, and a beeeyooteefull rae dunn vase that i so couldn’t afford, but adored nonetheless.

sigh…i do so love living in an area where there are so many fantastic independent artists everywhere i turn!

if you missed out on the event, check all of these amazing artists out on etsy – seller names are raedunn, oneblackbird and whitneysmith.

etsy of the day: sarahjanestudios prints

i’ve had this artist listed as one of my etsy favorites for ages. everything she comes up with just somehow makes me relaxed, happy and mellow. and for a high-strung girl like me, that’s something special. so, i’m pretty confident that if i were decorating a nursery (now there’s the “if” heard round the world…), the walls would be covered with sarah jane’s beautiful prints.

until then, these will just have to be my go-to baby gift – though i’ll have to temper that with my general feeling that one should not purchase art for someone else unless you’re really, freakishly confident in that person’s taste. i can’t even get art picks for the hubs right yet. then again, babies don’t have taste…so i can force mine upon them, right?

wow, digress much? anyway, more of sarah jane’s lovely work:

(above is goodnight, friend – which is making me sigh every time i look at it. pair it with i love you, friend, and life is pretty darn idyllic.)

breakfast bunny, $24.

j’aime ma maman, $24 (also see j’aime mon papa, which is equally adorable. and they’re available as a set for $40).

what little boys are made of, set of 3 prints for $60.

and one more, courtesy of the lovely poppytalk. the three bears, revisited, $24 (available in girl and boy versions).

etsy of the day: ceramic trinket buns

i am so in love with these little cupcake trinket boxes by EmmaLitten, i hardly know where to begin. i am forever lacking in a place to put my “daily wear” jewelry – it somehow ends up on the window ledge in my kitchen, thrown haphazardly on my nightstand, or on the itsy bitsy shelf above my bathroom sink. all really safe places to keep some of the more valuable things i own, don’t you think?

but the reality is i’m just too plain lazy to seek out a better locale when the time comes. i’m thinking i can buy one for each of those locations i mentioned, and then i’ll be so excited to use the ceramic trinket bun (don’t you just love the name?) that i might actually put my valuables into something safe.

i also love (love) the idea of using these in a home office or craft area, as homes for paper clips, thumbtacks, and so on. the moral of the story? pick up a handful (they come in two sizes) and you’ll find uses for them absolutely everywhere. and don’t forget to check out the rest of emma’s positively gorgeous wares…i want one of just about everything this amazing potter makes.

etsy of the day: satsuma press

i admit it. my name is shoppingsmycardio, and i’m a paperholic.

my holiday cards this year were from satsuma press, an amazing letterpress designer selling on etsy. the moment the cards arrived in the mail, i knew i’d be back for more. her work is really exquisite – the colors are amazing, and the designs are original and so sweet. truly, the photos don’t even begin to do her work justice.

i want to buy her cards just to frame them – they’re that gorgeous.

deisgns average about $3 – $5 each, but they’re worth every penny. for the first time ever, i actually managed to get holiday cards in the mail – due almost entirely to the fact that these were so gorgeous, i couldn’t wait to show them off. i can’t wait to receive my next package in the mail!

etsy of the day: mrs eliot books

obsessed hardly begins to cover it. i want so many pieces by this lovely artist that i’m considering just having her send me the whole lot, and offering her a kidney in trade.

mrs eliot’s originals are collages mounted on wood – she does both one-piece works and works that are a hinged-together series. hard to explain, but the picture above is an example of one of my favorites, called “sunday evenings.” the text on the images reads “Good heavens! It’s so beautiful at this time of the evening isn’t it?”. sigh…i heart heart heart it.

francesca (the artist) was kind enough to share a little bit with me about her composition and inspiration. i loved what she had to say:

my pieces on wood are mainly collages of paper, i also sometimes draw directly onto the wood. i love using pencil on white painted wood. I usually have all my paper scraps on my computer anyway because i sometimes work out compositions on my mac and it also allows me to print the patterns onto whatever paper i like, for example if i want a piece to have more texture, i might print onto an embossed vintage wallpaper.

i started with my [hinged wooden] books; at art school i had loved making collages of torn up sentences and illustrations in my little A6 sketchbooks and when i revisited them for inspiration i realised i wanted to do that for a living! but in a way that was more lasting and so that they could be on display and not hiding in a book that you had to open every time. that’s the problem with a lot of artists’ books, they sit on a bookshelf half the time and you never get to see inside. a few months later i discovered the craft blogs, and then etsy, and that was it.

delightful, isn’t she? best of all, her pieces are so affordable – you can score one of her originals (usually done in editions of 10) for $60-70, and she offers prints of most of her pieces for $20, as well as notecards and other fun toys. i have no idea how she does it, but she manages to make the prints of her hinged books every bit as darling as the original.

i can just picture this above the sink in my kitchen – so perfect! or, i love the idea of grabbing a bunch of her season prints as a set – i found autumn (my absolute favorite), winter and summer on the site, but i’m guessing spring is around the corner.

and, just because i love it so, i’ll show you this one too…it’s called milk.

head on over to francesca’s etsy site and snap up any or all of her gorgeous pieces today…or just enjoy the lovely art show (and the photos that show how adorable her home is – i’m in love with her teacup collection!).

etsy of the day: kim westad pottery

yep, another etsy obsession. i stumbled across the very talented kim westad’s work during one of my marathon etsy-browsing sessions, and i’m completely smitten. her pieces are all incredibly functional, but they’re also gorgeous, unique, and just ooze personality.

i snapped up one of these sweet peas pictured above (love the name!) as soon as i spied it – talk about love at first sight! but i haven’t quite decided how to use yet. it’d be perfect to hold makeup brushes, but i almost hate to hide it away in the bathroom. it would also be gorgeous on my mantle. or in my kitchen, holding a couple of flowers…hmm, maybe i need more than one…

but, it’s hard to decide if i need two of those, or whether i’d rather take advantage of the fact that kim sells her seconds on her etsy shop, so i could score this stunning crocus vase for $60, which is a pretty amazing deal on such a gorgeous piece of art. this would make a fabulous grouping on a shelf, with the sweet pea, the crocus vase and maybe a piece from the jonathan adler menagerie (which i’m still coveting with a vengeance) – maybe a hippo or a giraffe.

i love these whirl serving dishes as well – they’d be gorgeous either as a serving piece or just empty on a coffee table. and i’d love to snap up a whole set of these gorgeous soup bowls in all sorts of colors. heck, i’d be thrilled with two or three of just about everything kim has to offer. wouldn’t you?

shoppingsmycardio gifts: the procrastinator’s guide

well, we’re officially past every shipping deadline there is…if you haven’t ordered yet, you’re resigned to the crowds at the mall or a grungy poinsetta from your neighborhood grocery store.

unless, of course, you’re willing to get creative.

my favorite last-minute gift, and one i gave just yesterday, is a gift certificate to 20×200, a fabulous website that features limited edition art (200 of each) from semi-well-known artists for a cool $20. new pieces debut twice a week. you can purchase a “credit” gift certificate for $28.50 (you’re covering the shipping costs too), which will let your recipient go online, pick out the piece of art of their choice, and it will arrive at their door with your compliments.

another great option for avoiding the mall crunch is to check out the “shop local” section on etsy.com. you can find loads of great gift options just a starbucks meet-up away. just pick your gift, and send the artist a message asking if the item might be available for pick-up. most of the folks on etsy are so sweet they’ll probably even gift wrap it for you!

if neither of those work for you, or you’re just ready to throw your hands up, i have to admit i’m still a fan of the cheesy homemade gift, but i do so prefer when it’s thoughtful and specific to the recipient, not just the generic plate of cookies that gets passed around this time of year. have a friend that thinks your chicken enchiladas are to die for? go to the hardware store, pick up a pyrex, make her up a batch, and attach the recipe. have a serious cheese fiend in your life? head to whole foods, grab a few selections, a bottle of fig jam, and a cheese board, and you have a gift she’ll be thanking her stars for well past new year’s day.

(a big thanks to design sponge and lisa solomon for the gorgeous photo, above. if only my kitchen looked that great when i baked. and click here to check out lisa’s banana bread recipe…yum!!)
