random friday finds: the ‘what i did this week’ edition

readers, i don’t think i’ve done enough shopping this week.  frightening, i realize…but i just don’t have any particularly exotic, “must haves” on this random friday.  so instead, i thought i’d share the ‘must haves’ that have actually made it into my house over the last week or two.  mind you, this is no small feat these days, as my shopping account is in serious lockdown mode.

it’s been a long while since i walked into the gap and actually fell for something on sight.  but these shoes are just so cute in person, and such a great color & pattern for summer, i couldn’t resist.  the $39 pricetag didn’t hurt, nor did the fact that they miraculously run a full size large, so they actually had my size in the store.  i was a little wary of the bow in back, but i’ve decided it gives some nice detail, and keeps them from being too generic.

i’m fairly confident i’ve mentioned how much i detest hot weather.  besides my massive discomfort whenever the mercury hits 80+, there’s also the matter of my cheeks, which insist on becoming a very radioactive shade of crimson at the slightest increase in my internal temp.  literally, i’ve had people stop me during a workout to “make sure i’m okay.”  yes, i’m fine – i’m always that color.  given the severity of the problem, when i decided to test clinique’s new “redness solutions” mineral powder, i was skeptical…i was pretty sure painting my face yellow was not the answer.  but this stuff actually works – and somehow doesn’t settle into wrinkles like most loose powders.  i highly recommend it for those of you with fair skin that rebels in heat, or for the post-workout makeup routine.

and last, i mentioned recently how much i loved a new piece by emily elizabeth jewelry, and the designer was sweet enough to send it over as a thank you (yes, i know, my life is very hard).  honestly, i’ve hardly taken it off since it arrived…i think it might just be the perfect summer necklace.  because the chain is just a bit thick, and the leaves are a bit bold, it dresses up my ultra-casual summer style beautifully, and gives me just a dash of grecian goddess chic (who couldn’t use a bit of that?).

happy weekend, everyone!  i’ll be off visiting family for a few days, but should be back bright and early tuesday for more retail therapy.

sneak peek: alexander wang for the gap

picture-5

(all photos via racked)

those investigative geniuses over at racked have gotten hold of photos of the new alexander wang collection for the gap, due to hit stores on june 16.

much ado has been made about the motorcycle jacket…but i’m not as excited as i wanted to be.  i do, however, love the dresses…and the hats, though i never, ever look good in hats.

these pants, on the other hand, are scaring the bejeezus out of me.

my only fear with this collection is that it’ll be a repeat of the CFDA white shirt debacle, in which one could not leave the house without seeing at least 3 people wearing one of the “designer” white shirts.  i wore mine exactly once before retiring it…it was just too depressing to feel like such a clone.

what do you think?  will you be running to your neighborhood gap with a fistful of cash on 6.16, or are you just not feeling it?

deal of the day: 30% off at gap & co this weekend!

picture-15

here’s some exciting friday news:  gap is running its annual “give and get” event this weekend, in which you get 30% off at old navy, gap, banana republic and piperlime (this is a new, and very exciting addition!). plus, for every dollar you spend, gap donates 5% to one of several associated charities, and you get to choose which charity.  just head to the give and get website, sign up, choose your charity, and get shopping – use your discount online or in-store, as many times as you want!

while all of the charities are amazing, i’m going with the global fund, which works to eliminate AIDS in africa.  last year, gap was able to give $585,000 to the global fund via the “give and get,” so you’re definitely shopping for a worthy cause.

so, get signed up, and let me know what you’re buying!  i’m still stuck in piperlime heaven, deciding just how many shoes i can reasonably justify.  but i’ll be on to old navy next…time to stock up on some necessities.

happy hunting!

my favorite tee

last summer, i picked up a navy tee at the gap.  it wasn’t much to sing about…i’m not even sure i tried it on.  i just realized i didn’t have one, and threw it on the pile.

little did i know that it was about to become my absolute Favorite Tee Ever!  yes, it has beat out choices from banana, jcrew, and even my pricey james perse and splendid tees.  it’s velvety soft, light as air, and cut to be a slouchy, relaxed fit…but without looking sloppy.  because it’s not built to be fitted, it’s the perfect layer over or under just about anything.

so, i headed back to the gap a month (or two) later to fill my tee drawer with these wondrous creations…and they were gone.  ack!

but yesterday, joy and rapture at the gap, for my favorite tee is back!  turns out it’s a spring-only thing (probably owing to the featherweight fabric), and i’d grabbed from the last shipment in ’08.

now that they’re back, i’ve stocked up…and so should you.  they’re only $11 each if you buy two (and you should).  i’d suggest heading to a store – mine had considerably more color options than i’m seeing online.  ooh, and don’t miss the striped styles – with their pin-thin stripes and contrast trim, they’re perfectly wearable and actually flattering.

deals, deals everywhere…

it’s getting to be that very special time of year:  friends & family season!  while i normally save sale roundups until the end of the week, some of the best deals are expiring, and all are too good to miss.  so!

  • from 11/13 to 11/16, take 30% off sitewide at old navy, gap and banana republic for their annual friends & family event – plus, they’ll donate an additional 5% of your purchase price to charity.  use code B6BQLJDLGF8W at checkout.  i’ll admit there’s not a lot i’m after right now, but i am loving the jewelry at banana republic right now, and i think this is my green light to buy a few pieces.  (thanks to J for sharing this one!)
  • shopbop is also offering 30% off sitewide (well, except for sale, jewelry and accessories) – it started this morning and is good through thursday at midnight.  use code EARLYGIFT at checkout.
  • not nearly as exciting by comparison, but as long as we’re sharing, you can save 20% on all sweaters at jcrew through thursday at midnight.  use code SWEATERS at checkout.  i’ve been bummed to see the quality of j.crew’s cashmere decline of late, but this cozy academy cardigan looks like it might be the exception.
  • sephora’s friends & family is going on through 11/22 as well…20% off sitewide with code FF2008.
  • more friends & family goodness at restoration hardware:  20% off from 11/13 – 11/16 with code FFR2008.
  • and, one more – zoe is offering 40% off all coats, jackets and sweaters through 11/18 with code 8331064.  i’m sorely, sorely tempted to stock up on some lovely inhabit cashmere…if i can stop myself from picking up a cozy moncler down coat.

i think we all owe it to the economy to take advantage of a few of these…don’t you agree?

what else i want today: bellbottom trouser jeans

wow, how long has it been since the gap actually had cute, fashion-forward denim?? seems like forever! so when this bellbottom trouser jean landed in my in-box this morning, i was floored. hurray for patrick robinson, is all i can say – maybe we’re finally headed for bigger and better things from the ultimate mall retailer.

these bellbottoms look to have the perfect fit for this style – long and lean, just relaxed enough at the thigh, and not too terribly wide at the bottom (no channeling farah fawcett required). i love the flap pockets in the back, and the wash is perfectly faded – bellbottoms shouldn’t be too serious, after all.

best of all is the price – $59! now that’s worth a shot, don’t you think? just make sure to splurge on the tall size, so you can get them tailored to the right length…unless you’re short enough to pull off a 32″ inseam with heels.

so, what do you all think?

when did the gap start making cute stuff again?

i can’t think of the last time i really “wanted” something from the gap…usually, it’s more along the lines of “i need a cheap cotton tee, and american apparel is too far away”. but for spring, it’s either a combination of my deciding i need some more basics in my closet, or of their actually improving their design – either way, i’m happy.

loving this ruffle cardigan, though i’ll be ordering it in a tall size to avoid that cropped look that really only flatters 14-year-old bodies.

this yellow-and-grey rugby-striped cardigan would be just perfect on my dear friend A, who is hereby commanded to order it, stat.

i realize this probably means i’m spending too much time at home in sweats, but this 3/4 sleeve raglan sweatshirt actually looks like it might be a presentable way to wear my ratty PJs outside the house.

you know, i’ve been trying for weeks to decide on the perfect summer bag, and i almost think this one might be it. orange is so hot right now, i love the contrast trim, and i’m always lugging around magazines and books everywhere i go in the summer, so maybe a simple tote is just the thing.

best of all, with every single one of these items in my shopping cart, i’m barely topping $150. nothing wrong with that.

and no, i’m not going to drool all over the pierre hardy collection for gap, which was overpriced, largely unexciting, and sold out in about 30 seconds.
