worthy splurge: inhabit fall 2014

inhabit-fall-2014

The two worthiest splurges in my fall wardrobe, both from Inhabit: 1 | 2

Buy less, splurge more. I’m trying hard to make this my new mantra…not because I’ve recently come into a pot of gold or anything, but because I really think there’s value in reminding myself that if I can resist buying every “bargain” pair of jeans that crosses my path (which then sits unworn in the hilariously-overgrown stacks of denim in my closet) and instead buy the one pair I’ve been ogling all along, I’d probably end up saving money. best cashmere sweater

I’m finding this little allegory particularly true when it comes to my sweaters. Every bargain bin sweater I’ve nabbed over the years just languishes at the bottom of my drawer in a big old pile of retail regret. They pill, they snag, they lose their shape…I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that cheap sweaters just make me sad. Read on

a sartorial pickle (also, welcome back!)

Friends, I’m back! I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer, whatever you’ve been up to. My break wasn’t quite as meditative and relaxing as I might have hoped, but the work I got done made me feel more productive and happy than I’ve been in ages. One sweet client is in the process of opening a brand new store, another revamped her entire online presence, and I got to roll up my sleeves and help them make those dreams a reality. Not a bad way to spend the summer, if you ask me.

I also took a little trip to Portland, which I’ll be telling you all about before long. I’ve missed the Rose City so very much, and spending a few days traipsing around old haunts was just what the doctor ordered.

Despite the fact that 80-degree temperatures just won’t quit in CA, I’m also intent on rebuilding my wardrobe for fall. But I’m in one of those phases when every single thing in my closet just bores me to tears. Do you ever have those seasons? Read on

style files: jaci carley of inhabit

I suspect it’s no secret by now that I have a longstanding love of all things Inhabit. Some brands get my heart for a season, or even a year…but with Inhabit, it’s for life. Their fabrics defy all logic – cashmere that’s somehow both lightweight and sumptuous, cotton so soft that you’d swear it was silk – and their designs always strike that perfect balance between edgy and classic. Smart details like reverse seams and asymmetrical side vents make even a simple cashmere crewneck into a collector’s piece.

So, when their impossibly hip designer, Jaci Carley, offered to do a little styling challenge with me, featuring my favorite piece from their spring collection (three cheers for Twitter!), you can guess how quickly I said yes. inhabit cashmere

gift guide: joy gryson’s finds for the SMC girl

{Editor’s Note: This year, I’ve asked a few of the people whose style I spend all year admiring to share their holiday wish lists. Stay tuned – we’ll have a new expert every day for the next two weeks!} fashion gift guide

I’ve been a fan (bordering on a groupie) of Joy Gryson‘s since she debuted her very first collection…even her very first bag. In fact, I still have my original Skye bag, and I still get stopped on the street every time I carry it. Joy started out designing for big names like Coach and Calvin Klein, and was the Director of Design at Marc Jacobs (where she designed most of their now-iconic styles) before she left to found her own brand in 2006. Since then, Gryson has grown incredibly, but that impeccable quality and thoughtful attention to detail hasn’t changed a bit. What I love most about Joy – besides the fact that she’s a superstar designer who is so friendly and down-to-earth that she still answers my emails personally! – is her ability to seamlessly blend an uptown aesthetic with downtown hip.

Just as I’d hoped, Joy’s wish list is packed with picks that would be just the thing for a girl whose style is classic with a touch of edge…in other words, you and me! I don’t know about you, but this is the list I’ll be forwarding directly to Santa.

just in: inhabit summer 2012

Would you look at all the goodness that just hit the racks at Inhabit for summer? Sure, sweaters aren’t the first thing that spring to mind in June. But as I type, it’s cloudy and raining outside my window, and I can’t think of much I’d rather wear today than one of these open-weave beauties.

As always with Inhabit, these are splurges…but so, so worthwhile. They’re those pieces you’ll turn to summer after summer, the ones you look forward to wearing as soon as the weather turns warm. And I don’t know about you, but I’d do just about anything to get excited about warm weather.

Check out all of the Inhabit Summer 2012 goodies on their site…and let me know what you’d buy in a fantasy splurge.

this just in: 70% off winter styles at inhabit

Really, what else is there to say?

Well, there is one thing to say. My favorite piece of the season seems to have finally returned in a size M (who knows how many there are): the Double-Faced Crewneck Jacket. As soft as their regular cashmere, but so much more structured, it plays perfectly for business. Fair warning: it runs a bit on the trim side, and you’ll note that little “all sales are final” disclaimer above. I’m a size 10, and it’s a snug (but do-able) fit on me. On a 6-8, it’d be genius. Especially at $125.

Go forth and shop, friends!

birthday bash, day one: inhabit cashmere!

{Entries now closed, but thanks for looking!}

Hi all! Welcome to the first day of what I think just might be the most exciting week EVER at ShoppingsMyCardio: it’s our fifth birthday! Exactly five years ago today, I launched ShoppingsMyCardio, and I can honestly say I had no idea what the hell I was doing. But it all turned out okay! I’m absolutely overwhelmed that I’ve been here this long, and so, so honored that you choose to come visit me every week. What started out as a whim has become a conversation with you that I look forward to each and every day, and I can’t thank you all enough for that.

Since taking you all out for beer and cake was geographically impractical, I thought instead I’d put out a call to a few of my absolute favorite brands to see if they could help us celebrate. And wow, did they respond! They were so wonderful, so generous, and so excited to help us blow out those candles, that we actually have a week-long Big Blog Birthday Bash planned! That’s right, FIVE amazing prizes, which I’ll be telling you about over the next FIVE days (god, but I love symmetry). And with that, drum roll please….

Our first giveaway of the week is from a brand that’s near and dear to my heart: Inhabit NY. You know my love of cashmere runs deep, particularly when it comes to Inhabit’s unparalleled collection – I’ve been waxing poetic about them almost as long as I’ve been blogging. I have yet to buy a piece from them that doesn’t thrill me to the bone, and every last one is in constant rotation in my closet.

To kick off our big Birthday Bash, Inhabit is sending one of you this cashmere scoop-back pointelle pullover (retail is $328!), fresh from their spring collection! You can choose whatever color and size suits your fancy – I’m partial to the Lake blue, but they’re all beautiful.

I can’t even tell you how much I love this sweater – hands down, it was my favorite piece from their spring line. The slim, elbow-length sleeves and little asymmetrical pointelle details at the waist keep it elegant, and the scoop in the back is subtly sexy but bra-friendly. And I confess, I’ve worn it backwards a couple of times for a little extra va-va-voom. It’s the perfect work-to-cocktails shell under a blazer, but I love the way it dresses up slouchy boyfriend jeans and a ballet flat, or any number of spring skirts. It may just be the perfect spring/summer basic.

TO ENTER:

I really wanted to reward my regular, loyal readers with this giveaway. So, for this week in particular, sticking around pays off. Every day this week, I’ll announce a new, completely amazing prize. That day, you can enter up to three times, and each of those 3 entries qualifies you to win any of the five prizes announced all week – you’re not just entering for that day’s specific prize. So, how to do it? Simple:

Entry 1. Comment on the post. Easy peasy.

Entry 2. Facebook: “Like” Shopping’s My Cardio (I know, vain much?), and repost the contest on Facebook (with a link), using those brand new, handy-dandy little buttons at the bottom of the post (using the button is optional, but they’re new and exciting!). Use your imagination, but something like this would work well:

I just entered to win the most gorgeous @Inhabit cashmere sweater @Shopping’s My Cardio! http://www.shoppingsmycardio.com

…then come back and leave a second comment telling me you did so.

Entry 3. Twitter: “Follow” @ShoppingsCardio, and tweet about the contest (with a link) using those same fancy buttons. Just as a suggestion:

I just entered to win the most gorgeous @inhabitny cashmere sweater @shoppingscardio! http://www.shoppingsmycardio.com #SMCBirthdayBash

…then come back and leave a third comment letting me know you got that done.

If you enter all three times every day this week, you’ll earn a total of fifteen entries, dramatically increasing your odds. Make sense? We’ll close entries Monday night (6/13), and announce the lucky, lucky winners on Tuesday, 6/14. Oh, US/Canada residents only on this one, I’m afraid – and your presents are coming to you straight from the sponsors donating them.

Good luck, friends!
