get gifting: the jet set

If she’s guaranteed an upgrade every time she sets foot on a plane, knows the best hotels in every major city, and racks up more frequent flyer miles than most pilots, here are a few treats she’s sure to stash in her carry-on.

  2. This trim tote packs flat, holds a ton, and the baby soft leather is stylish enough for any adventure. Baggu leather tote, $150
  3. Every good traveler needs a page-turner novel to get them through those Atlanta layovers. Sarah’s Key, by Tatiana de Rosnay, $15
  4. This clever gadget is a surge protector, USB charger port and phone cradle all in one – pretty impressive for under $20. Portable charging station, RCA, $19
  5. Heats up in an instant, seriously delivers on style, and comes with a trim, ultra-glam case to keep your clothes safe when you have to throw this in your bag while it’s still warm. GHD Scarlet styler, $225
  6. Borrow from the boys and get her a dopp kit that will actually hold all her beauty essentials in one bag. Hammocks & High Tea dopp kit, $50

  8. The stuff deskside daydreams are made of. 2012 Paris calendar, Little Brown Pen, $22
  9. Oh, the places you’ll go – these are tiny enough to stow away in the smallest suitcase, and comfy enough to save your travel-weary feet. Tieks foldable ballet flats, $175

friday finds

Happy Friday, friends! I wish I could say the weekend held rest and relaxation for me, but no – it holds deadline-busting piles of work. All amazing opportunities, mind you…but work, nonetheless.

So, I’m more than ready for a little Friday Finds distraction to take me away from all that 9-to-5. How about you?

My scarf obsession is nothing new, but I’ve had the image of this beautiful Suno scarf open on my desktop all week. Give me a tissue-thin expanse of wool or a cloud print, and I’m yours. Combine the two, and I’m speechless. This beauty has made it to the top of my holiday wish list…if I don’t cave and buy it for myself first.

I’ve been watching Pan Am this season, and have only recently warmed to it (does anyone else think it was a slow starter?). But now, I’m hooked…by the fashions, naturally. I spotted someone wearing a cocktail ring over gloves the other night, and was smitten with the look. Imagine my surprise when Kate Spade had the same idea.

I’m feeling the value of simple, classic totes these days…I can’t explain it, but there we are. And so, I offer you a splurge (from Il Bisonte, whose bags are unbelievably well crafted):

…and a (sort-of) steal (from IB&B, who I don’t know, but lambskin is always a good thing):

I just discovered a little shop called Curator, carrying a few well-selected lines and some gorgeous house-designed pieces as well. This dramatic wool a-line coat is my current favorite – it’s a great nod to the cape trend without being as bulky and shapeless as capes tend to be. It’s also on sale, which never hurts. I wish I were snuggling in this right this second.

And last, but definitely not least, this list needs some color, don’t you think? Designer Jonathan Saunders recently collaborated with stationery legend Smythson to create a group of gorgeous new diary planners. Doesn’t it make you wish you still kept a paper calendar?

Have a wonderful weekend, friends…and if you’re out shopping the Nordstrom Half-Yearly sale, be sure to stop by the café for the best Caramel Apple Cider on the planet.

See you back here next week!

friday finds

Happy Friday, all! It’s supposed to be sunny here in Portland this weekend, thank the good lord…we’ve earned it! So, let’s get right to the point so that I can head off and meet a friend for brunch (ah, the perks of working from home).

I’ve been loving Rebecca Minkoff’s new shoe collection…particularly these flats, which I very nearly bought last night. Should I have splurged?

And I’m pretty much completely in love with Kate Spade’s enamel bracelets this season, made even better by the cheeky little sayings engraved inside. We’ve officially passed “want” and are dangerously close to “need.”

Trouser jeans are everywhere this time of year, but face it – it’s going to be too hot very soon. When that day finally arrives, these chic inky linen trousers from Max Studio are going to be a stand-up stand-in. True, linen is awfully high-maintenance…but I think these might be just as pretty in their raw, wrinkled state as they are all pressed and perfect.  What do you think?

And last up, if you’re in a do-gooder mood this weekend, stop by your local Kiehl’s on Saturday. They’re partnering with Share Our Strength, an organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger in America, for an event that benefits everyone. Just for stopping in the store, you’ll get a 10-day sample of their Powerful Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate, and they’ll donate $1.50 per person to Share Our Strength. Plus, a few of the stores are hosting bake sales. Cupcakes, no wrinkles, and you get to feel good about your day.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

currently coveting: kate spade illustrated

I don’t know what’s going on over at Kate Spade this year (we’ll be chatting about yet another new find there soon), but suddenly, I just can’t get enough!  This week, I’m palpitating over their gorgeous new “Illustrated” collection for Lenox.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I have something of an obsession with teacups.  But these?  Sigh.  They’re the first (mis)matched set I’ve ever fallen for. And believe me, that’s saying something. I love the stripe detail on the saucers, and the little topiaries…the whole thing is just perfect. Doesn’t it just make you want to host a tea party?

cheap thrill: red trousers

It usually takes me a while to fall for something that’s really “trendy”. After a youth spent pining obsessively over the latest and greatest shiny new thing “everyone else” had (oh, those Guess jeans, they haunt me still!), I’ve learned that the hotter something is, the quicker it fades…and these days, i’m just too cheap individual to buy in.

Most of the time, this usually just results in me finally breaking down and buying something approximately 5 minutes before it goes out of style. Skinny jeans, for example. But, just this once, I’m thinking of plunging head-on into a trend while it’s still new(-ish). It’s these lovely red trousers I’m seeing everywhere…aaahhh, I just can’t resist!

{image credits: fashionologie, what i wore, stockholm street style}

Delightful, aren’t they? Such a perfect shock of color in a sea of bland neutrals in my closet (what? me? winter blues? nah…). And they’re really seasonless, if you think about it. Pair with camel or navy in the winter, and white or pink in the summer…it’s completely caught me off guard to think of red as such a versatile shade, but there you are.

Plus, a friend told me recently she can’t remember the last time she saw me in something other than jeans. And so, I thought…I’ll show her! I’ll buy red pants. But, while skinny versions abound, it’s actually sort of a trick to find the wide-legged variety. (And honestly, I’m just too old, and too curvy, for skinny colored denim. Really.)

Hours of exhaustive searches later, I narrowed the field to two options…and, readers, you’ll be shocked to know I chose the road less expensive. Yes, instead of the $300 Kate Spade version I wanted (gah, now they’re on sale for $200! damn…maybe I should just…no, no, I’ll persevere), I’m going with the $39.50 version from…Victoria’s Secret.

(do you like how I cropped out the top half of the VS model to negate the scary, overly-sexy pose?)

So yes, I’m terrified. I’ve never purchased a single item of clothing from Vicki, and I was totally content with keeping that record intact. But…well, I caved. I fully expect it to be a sartorial disaster, but I’m honestly sort of wildly curious about them, and had to see them in person. Plus, it will make for excellent blogging fodder, don’t you think?

I’ll be sure to report back.

currently coveting: kate spade scout

it’s been quite literally years since i’ve wanted a bag from kate spade.  but when the brand comes back, it’s back with a bang!  this sweet little scout bag has made the rounds in the blogosphere, and has had a full-page ad in every single spring magazine, but its overexposure isn’t stopping me from some very serious coveting.  tiny crossbody bags are insanely big for spring, and this one just takes that carefree, dashing-across-the-street-to-hail-a-cab-while-wearing-polka-dots thing to a whole new level.

(by the way, i just now noticed the model is wearing polka dots. i swear. weird, right?)

i can tell it’s bad because i don’t just want one.  i want a whole candy-colored rainbow of them!

my only heartbreak here is that the orange, my favorite, only comes in the smaller size, which is seriously itty bitty.  i guess i’ll need one orange and a larger version in the hot pink.  it’s the only solution, right?

my funny valentine

every year, i start out grousing about valentine’s day.  how it’s a hallmark holiday, created by retailers to force us to spend money, is sheer torture when you’re single, allows restaurants to charge ridiculous amounts of money for mediocre prix-fixe meals, and really…didn’t we just finish buying christmas gifts?

but i always end up falling for valentine’s day in the end.  i’m swayed by all that pretty pink and red candy, the paper hearts strewn everywhere i go, and the fantasy that maybe, just maybe, i’ll send out valentine’s day cards where i failed so miserably at holiday cards this year.

~ bortolomiol rose prosecco:  because, really, when else is pink prosecco de rigeur?  (believe me, this one should always be…)
~ peggy li rough diamond disc necklace:  so subtle and lovely – i think it’s the prettiest valetine i’ve seen this year. plus, can you even talk about valentine’s day without jewelry?
~ see’s candies hot hearts:  simply the best valentine’s day candy ever!
~ kate spade striped bow tank:  it’s freezing, of course, but this ribboned tank makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.  in july, i’ll be wishing i’d splurged on this…and it will be sold out.
~ bristols 6 lovin’ kit:  in case you (or your valentine) are feeling a bit more naughty than nice…
~ paper source DIY moustache valentines:  is it even possible not to smile when you see these guys?
~ rifle paper co. customized valentine’s portrait:  can you imagine a sweeter valentine than this?
~ zedena designs enamel heart necklaces: conversation hearts get me every single time, and these might be the cutest yet.

what are your plans for valentine’s day this year?
