oh, and deal of the SEASON at bloomingdales

the lovely A has alerted me to a pretty fabulous phenomenon:  stepped discounts at bloomingdales until tomorrow, 4/2 (no, this is not an april fool…that would be just mean).  score 20% off purchases up to $299, 30% off purchases up to $499 and 40% off purchases $500 and over.  on EVERYTHING.  plus free shipping if you spend $300.  oh yeah, and get an extra $25 off a $100+ purchase with code PRIVATE.

so, basically, god is telling you it’s time to buy a new handbag for spring.  being in a fairly serious slouchy bag mood at present, i humbly suggest the lovely kooba dale tote or this bright marc by MJ huge hillier hobo.  i think i’ve gotten too lazy for satchels.

happy hunting!

luxe or less: kirna zabete style genius

every so often, an email hits my inbox and i just exclaim “yes, exactly!” when i open it.  such was this email i received yesterday from kirna zabete.  kz is every new yorker’s secret source for the latest and greatest in fashion lovelies, this fantastic store is finally offering its designer wares online.

i think each and every one of their picks is a flawless, investment-worthy choice…and, if you can swing it, you absolutely should.  if nothing else, you should at least spend some time playing on their site…there are so, so many lovelies to ogle.

but i love this look so much that i’m going to give you some budget-friendly ways to get the look…so that you can look as hot as this picture without walking the streets begging for spare change to finance your fashion.

i love this version of the tie-neck blouse from banana republic (in the lovely purple, not that blah tan color), and it’s just $69.  equally lovely is this version from marc by marc jacobs, marked down to $78 at nordstrom.  but best of all is this stunner from roberto rodriguez, which i may even prefer to the original, on sale for $200.

and if those loooovely lanvins just don’t fit the budget, i’d swap for this version from bloch london for $163 – gorgeous (and a perfect match for the banana republic top above!)!  for an even better steal, i have to admit that i would never have thought to check here, but plus-size site silhouettes has a quite lovely satin cap-toe flat (in sizes 7-12) for a cool $40.  i’d go for the wine color, i think…perfect for this time of year!

the clutch is vastly more complicated, as i adore their choice and hate to mess with it.  so…how about if i find the exact same alexander wang clutch for you at 50% off?  yep…$325 at shopbop.  don’t say i never did anything for you!

deal of the day: 20% off sitewide at shopbop

my prayers have been answered – even the mighty shopbop has finally ponied up a 20% code.  use code TREATS2008 to save 20% on all full-priced merchandise, today only!

how to treat yourself?  sky’s the limit.  those fingerless glove/mitten thingies i showed you a while ago are a no-brainer.  i’ve been dying to pick up a new coat this season, and this might be just the excuse i’ve been looking for to splurge on something truly fabulous from diane von furstenberg.  or these crazy cool blue suede boots from marc jacobs.  or i might take this opportunity to pick up this gorgeous silk top from t-bags that i would otherwise have been far too cheap to buy – the print and ruffle details will be amazing under any number of blazers and cardigans, and i can pair it with anything from trousers to a pencil skirt to jeans.

so, what will you be splurging on?

what i want today: marc jacobs pocket scarf

how did i not know about this geniusness before?  scarves with pockets – fantastic!  i am positively hopeless with keeping track of gloves…they inevitably end up dropped on the ground next to my car, right before i drive away to leave them abandoned in a parking lot. but if i had this lovely marc jacobs pocket scarf, i’d be snug as a bug, and no chance of losing those ultra-expensive lambskin opera-length gloves i’ve been coveting.

the scarf comes in this greyish-brown with pink stripes…but if the pink is a little too precious for you, i much prefer the charcoal/blue version (sadly, my tech skills are failing me today, so you get a pic of the pink one).  in either color, it’s $128, which is a relatively easy way to start a relationship with my BFF, marc jacobs.  come on, do your duty and keep this economy going!

what i want today: a resurrected classic

the marc jacobs stella bag is a definite classic.  during its original release, it reached near-cult status with its devotees, and with good reason – the bag is stylish, timeless, and a perfect everyday tote.

so, i was thrilled to see the old become new again – jacobs has re-released the cult classic for fall, complete with a gorgeous, crinkly calfskin and a messenger-length strap (which can be detached using the subtle gold rivets on the sides – a detail i love).  now you truly have the best of both worlds.

it’s available in more classic shades, but i love this dark plum color, above.  it’s a nod to the trendy jewel tones of fall, but you’ll be amazed by how neutral the color really is.  great with denin, greys, blacks, and even other deep, fall colors – there’s a reason this bag has been a staple of stylish women everywhere for years.  this lovely new version is sure to become a staple in your closet too.  pick it up at saks before history repeats itself, and the stella is just a faint fashion memory.

asked and answered: cool fanny packs?

it was bound to happen…a reader question that had me completely and totally stumped.

Is there such a thing as a “cool” fanny pack? Something that can be worn for a runner/jogger or traveling?  I was thinking about this the other day and of course, you came to mind.  A friend of mine has a cute LeSportsac one, but I don’t really know how “cool” it really is and who can really pull something like that off.  ~ A

hmm.

well…i said i’d answer any and all reader questions, and i meant it, darn it.

so, before we get into the fashion faux-pas issue, i don’t think a fanny pack when used for running has to be “cool” – i think it’s pretty much all about function at that point, and i’d hit up my local REI – you only want the necessities with you, and anything too heavy is going to cause chafing, which is definitely a fashion don’t.  though, for me, i think this arm band pocket by nike would be much less annoying than a waist pack if i was actually running…no jostling, and no risk of the aforementioned chafing.

for travel, that’s another matter entirely.  i’ve never been an advocate of “travel wear”, unless you’re wading through a jungle.  when i travel, one of my favorite pasttimes is pointing out the tourists – white tennis shoes, hawaiian shirt (regardless of climate), pockets stuffed with maps, cameras, and brochures from various museums…and a fanny pack (or one of those travel neck wallet things, possibly even worse than the fanny pack!).  so, i’d start by saying i think a fanny pack puts you at greater risk of being mugged, etc. than a regular purse, because it effectively plants a big “i’m a tourist” sign on your back.

besides the goofy tourist factor, i don’t know about you, but i’m not looking to add bulk to my midsection…and nothing accomplishes that like strapping a bag full of your daily necessities around your waist.

soapbox aside, i did manage to find a few non-heinous options, if you’re willing to suffer through the aforementioned challenges.  first off is the now-famous gucci belt bag, whose resurgence in popularity a few years back is due to an appearance on sex and the city, being sported by the lovely sarah jessica parker.  at $495, you need to love it – but at least you’re on trend while wearing the fanny pack, which is tough to manage.  and that silver is actually sort of cool, i must admit.  then, there’s also this posh turnlock belt bag from marc by marc jacobs, but it’s also pricey at $228 – and i’d much rather see you spend $250 on a handbag you’ll love than a waist pack you’ll constantly question.

in terms of bang for your proverbial buck, the lovely writers of bunnyshop reminded me that there was one option i found long ago that i think is the closest to “cool” i’ve ever seen for a waist pack.  etsy seller bonspiel creations is a longtime favorite of mine, and they make several cute-as-a-button options, in two different sizes ($64 and $32), that i think one could actually manage to pull off without slapping that “tourist” sign between your shoulderblades.

does anyone have any other ideas for our darling reader?

what i want today: save my pole!

i know, it’s just wrong…particularly given that it’s $158 for a cotton tote bag.  but seriously, this marc by MJ “miss marc goes green” tote bag is right in keeping with my pathetically simple, 3rd grade sense of humor, and i want it.  at least, today.

if you do too, grab it at saks…oddly, i’m willing to bet this sells out before you know it.

haute or horrid? marc jacobs mouse flats

i’ve always loved the marc jacobs mouse flats…but i’m starting to think i’ve outgrown them. i think i love them for my 20-year-old self…not so much for my 30-year-old self, who i’m pretty sure can’t pull them off any more than she can successfully pull these off.

but then, my 20-year-old self was so not buying $250 shoes. so, what do you all think…is the price point proof enough that these are cute for grown-ups, or are they still a little too “reclaiming my youth”?

fortunately, i’m not completely out of luck. i can definitely pull off these lovely suede boots, which are high on my list for fall. as are these gorgeous navy and salmon heels, which have that 1940s vibe i so love.

hurray for piperlime starting to carry great shoes like marc by marc…it’s about time i had an option other than zappos (who i’m boycotting ever since they suspended their free overnight shipping).
