beauty buzz: three things I’m loving right now

Since it’s Monday, and we’re all cursing that extra hour of sleep we lost yesterday, something tells me we could all use a little beautifying this morning. So, I thought I’d share a few of the spring beauty goodies that have recently made it to the front of the towering pile of products otherwise known as my bathroom counter.

spring beauty, new beauty products, beauty review, nars palette, kiehls ultra facial, sonia kashuk lotion Read on

get gifting: at the spa

Welcome to Gift Guide Season at SMC! For the next week (or so), we’ll have dozens of ideas for every last impossible-to-buy-for person on your holiday list. By the time we’re done, you’ll have made that list, checked it twice, and settled in for a long winter’s nap. Enjoy!

For most of the girls who’ll lust after this list, their holiday fantasy is a Sephora shopping spree. To make sure you deliver the perfect find, I’ve done months of exhaustive testing and culled the best of the best from the legion of holiday gift sets you’ll see this season. The result? My favorite beauty gift guide yet. Those Stila lip glazes are just the thing for your gloss-addicted friend, the Origins set is perfect for the boho glam girl on your list, and really, does Bobbi Brown ever get it wrong?

As for me, I’d be happy to curl up in those unbelievably soft Eberjey pajamas, snuggle into those limited-edition leopard UGG slippers and call it a night.

friday finds

Happy Friday, everyone…what a week it’s been! I’ve hardly had time to breathe, let alone blog, but that hasn’t stopped me from amassing quite a list of Friday Finds. Even when I’m swimming in things to do, I always manage to find time to covet.

First, I’ve found a new love: BeautyAddicts’ “Double Deception” concealer. The right half is lighter and creamier, so it’s perfect for under the eyes, and the left side works wonders for the rest of your face. It’s all very Alice in Wonderland/magic caterpillar mushroom, but the results are flawless.

I’m obsessing a little over wanting a new pair of ankle boots for the fall. While I’m terrified of light-colored suede for a number of reasons (rain in Portland + denim = blue stripes all over my boots. Not cool.), these are calling to me. And, at $120, I can actually afford to listen.

Have you seen the latest goodies at J.Crew? I’m obsessed with a couple of things: specifically, this tweed jacket and that sequined top. Truthfully, I dream of being able to pull off sequins for day, and I’m thinking if ever there was a reasonable candidate, it’s this one.

And speaking of glitz and glam, I am fascinated by this ring. I can’t exactly figure out how it would look on, but how wrong could it be? I’m smitten.

Even though I’m mad as hell at Target over my whole Missoni debacle, I have to show you this Sonia Kashuk brush set. The brushes are great, the metallic tweed clutch is adorable (and actually cute enough to be carried as a clutch), and the whole thing is $25. I’d have bought the clutch alone for that price, so consider the brushes a highly useful bonus.

Have a wonderful weekend, friends. I’m hoping to spend a couple of hours with my husband and George Clooney…and I’ll see you back here next week!

friday finds

I am so positively ready for this weekend, friends…it’s been one of those weeks.  And my mom’s coming to town tomorrow, so I’m especially looking forward to one of those fun weekends of shopping, eating out, and being just a little bit spoiled that we all look forward to when our parents come to town.  So, forgive me if this week’s list is a bit more succinct…I still have to clean the guest room.

Since we had such a serious beauty splurge this week, I thought I’d make it up to you with a steal.  These new spring treats from Sonia Kashuk for Target are just as sweet as can be.  I particularly love the Gold Mine brush set ($25) – the wooden handles give the brushes a luxe feel, and the holder could easily double as a minaudiere for outdoor summer parties.  And the Spring Awakenings makeup palette ($20) is packed with useful colors, and so complete, it could be the only thing you pack in your overnight bag.  Plus, it has that same adorable woven wicker on the outside.

I literally just received an email from Le Train Bleu, a favorite shop of mine, letting me know about a new arrival, and it’s too good not to share.  Every single thing I buy there garners oodles of compliments (in fact, my mom once stole a Le Train Bleu cardigan right off my back!), and I never see it being worn by someone else.  These enamel lockets are brand new in the shop, and I’m completely smitten.  If only I could figure out how to choose between coral and cobalt.

To say that I don’t need more plates in my life would be an understatement…in fact, I think I’d have to start storing them in the fireplace (hey, that’s an idea…).  But the new spring dishware at West Elm is so beautiful, I’m having a very hard time resisting.  They’re also on sale.  Quel torture!

That’s it, friends.  Have a wonderful weekend, whatever you’re doing. I hope there’s sun in your Sunday this week…my mom will never forgive me if Portland doesn’t see a bit of spring sunshine while she’s in town!
