liberty of london + target = love!

i literally can. not. wait. for the liberty of london/target collaboration to hit stores this sunday (3/14).  as in, i start bouncing up and down in my chair if i think about it too much.  yep, my husband is about to be living in a sea of chic, kitschy floral…and you know, i have not a smidge of guilt!

for those that aren’t familiar, liberty of london is an amazing, iconic department store based in (surprise) london.  they’re best known for their stunning textiles, especially their signature bold florals.  for their collaboration with target, they’ve lent their signature patterns to everything from lingerie to teacups…and i’m thinking i’ll need (at least) one of nearly everything in the collection.

to tide me over until sunday, i thought i’d share a little sneak peek of my favorite pieces from the collection:

(all photos graciously provided by target corp)

yes, the shopping list is long, i realize…fortunately, nearly everything in the collection tops out at about $50, and most is much, much less than that.  so really, my hubs should be thrilled i’m saving him so much money.  right?

see you at target this sunday!

outsmarting the DMV, and a rendezvous with rodarte

i think it’s a day worth mentioning when the weight on your driver’s license is no longer a lie…and may even, in fact, be a bit of an exaggeration.  amazing stuff, really.

for those of you on new year’s resolution diets, i don’t recommend my method of weight loss (nor do i think it would be possible unless you were lucky enough to contract some sort of rare south american tapeworm), but there is definitely some excitement involved in going down a size (or two…).  at this rate, i might even be able to wear mcqueen by the end of the year.  because, you know, size is the only thing standing between me and a $2,000 blazer.

in more realistic retail therapy news (see? you said you wanted more frugal finds – it’s like ‘i dream of jeannie’ in blogland), i happened on the rodarte for target collection on last sunday’s target trip, and ended up bringing their navy lace tee home with me:

(hmm, maybe my new hobby should be learning to take photos that don’t suck…)  it’s sold out online, but if you happen to spot one in the store, it’s a worthy buy, which is saying something, as i’d more or less given up hope on the entire target/designer collab thing after so many misses of late.

but lacy lingerie is everywhere for spring, and if i can nail the look for $16.99, i’m a happy shopper.  the layering options are endless – over a dark tank and under a cardi, under a summer dress, peeking out under a v-neck sweater or a menswear vest…you get the idea.  (i actually did take a photo of the layered look, but it makes the first one look like ansel adams.)  sizing was a little on the narrow side…buy like you’re buying juniors, and you’ll be safe.

with that, i’m off to take a few highly invasive medical tests.  but i have brownies waiting for me when i get home.  so that’s something.

sneak peek: anna sheffield for target

i haven’t done a really good pre-release stalking of a target collection in ages, so i’m thrilled to see from the preview pics that their latest collaboration with jewelry designer anna sheffield (of bing bang jewelry) is definitely worthy of at least a little stalk-age.

all photos courtesy of fabsugar

sadly, like so many of the target collabs, i think the designer’s signature style is so pared down in this collection that you’d never know who created the looks, which is unfortunate.  but, even without bing bang‘s signature punk appeal, these pieces are a great, cheap way to add some serious style to your look.

it’s no surprise to see a bevy of multi-chain necklaces in the collection.  they show no signs of losing their popularity this fall, and they’re a great way to boost the cool quotient of an otherwise bland ensemble.  but i’m actually after the earrings in this collection.

i love those long-but-light dangling chains, and the super-sparkly studs, which i’m hoping are just as lovely in person.  and there are some bird earrings that, though i’m a little over the whole bird thing, have enough of a hip/love tattoo vibe that i just might need those as well.

best of all, prices are supposed to stick under $80, and i’m betting the bulk of the line will sit squarely in the $30-50 range.  not the biggest bargain in town, but when you consider her regular line will run you about 10x that, it looks better all the time.

check out more pics from the line over at fabsugar, and save me a spot in line when they debut on august 30.

how-to: the stylish strapless edition

ed. note: if you haven’t entered our fab contest this week, now’s your last chance.  entries close at midnight tonight…click here to enter!

i was all set to rave about the cutest skirt i saw at anthropologie on my coffee/retail therapy run this morning.  but online, it’s looking a bit like a lampshade, so now i’m thinking perhaps not.

instead, let’s talk strapless dresses.  i’ve never been a huge fan – being relatively well endowed in the (ahem) bosom area, i always seem to spend all of my time frantically yanking on the top of the dress, fearing (however irrationally) the inevitable.  and i tend to think of strapless frocks as either swim-coverup-casual, a la juicy couture, or exceedingly formal (my wedding gown).  it just seems to be too much skin exposure for an average day.  but lately, i’ve been seeing strapless looks done in such a perfectly modest, tailored and stylish way that i’m beginning to reconsider.

picture-5

it all began with a post from superstar french style icon garance doré extolling the manner in which lovely italian women put together the strapless dress and the flat sandal.  and truly, the look is lovely, don’t you agree?  sophisticated, simple, and undeniably stylish, without being overly dressy.  oh, and did i mention it’s also incredibly easy to duplicate?   any black strapless will do – i’m actually a fan of this version at target.  add something like these chic braided sandals from modern vintage (check out that detachable strap…and on sale, no less!), a black belt you almost certainly already own, and some of that perfectly tousled hair, and presto: chic and so very simple.

picture-31

shortly after spying this look, i was browsing anthropologie’s latest catalog, and saw the most clever styling of a strapless dress ever!  i love the jersey v-neck tee beneath – the neckline gives such interest, and it looks like an entirely different dress!  i never think of layering things underneath a strapless, but i just love this look.  definitely office-appropriate, and again, so simple!  i’m guessing you already have the tee in your closet, and the dress is just a click away.  i’d love to see this with a patterned tee and a solid dress, perhaps layered with a cropped denim jacket…the possibilities are, if not endless, definitely varied.

so, what do you think? are you ready to reconsider going strapless?

cheap thrills: the bracelet edition

gah…spring sales started this morning at barneysanthropologienordstrom and shopbop – i’ve been so overwhelmed, i almost forgot to post!  overall, i’m trying to be good, but this dress may be too perfect to pass up.

     picture-41

once you return from all of that orgasmic sale goodness, i thought i’d share a few bargain bracelet finds that have caught my eye this week.

yesterday’s internet browsing led me to the new dana buchman collection for kohl’s, of all places.  to save you some time, most of it looks a little iffy, but this coral bracelet is actually pretty perfect for summer, especially for $20.  it reminds me of something you’d get at banana republic, but for a lot less. don’t you think it’s just the thing to dress up those breezy, neutral summer frocks?

and then, there was this gorgeous rainbow of enamel bracelets i spied online at target.  love!!  i’m dying to buy the lot of these (at $18 each, i actually could!) and mix and match colors to my heart’s content.  if nothing else, they’re a great opportunity to play around with color combinations that might scare you.  i very literally can’t pick a favorite…but i will say the black is a little blah for summer.  pile on a stack of these beauties, and your tee-and-shorts ensemble will suddenly be insta-chic.  promise.

happy friday!

it’s finally here!  dear readers, i need a weekend something fierce, so thank goodness it’s arrived.  so what, you’ll ask, will i be doing with this wonderful weekend?  brace yourselves…it’s exciting:

picture-52

making a mad dash to target (this may even be happening today), as i had completely forgotten their loomstate collection released this week.  the idea of getting organic cotton loomstate tees for $15 has me over the moon, even if i am a little miffed that most of the dresses in the collection would barely cover my bum.

finishing my copy of the cheap date guide to style – a style guide written by the editors of a fab alternative fashion mag in the UK (called, not surprisingly, “cheap date”).  i’m only halfway through, but i absolutely love their take on fashion from all angles, and their “fashion is whatever makes you feel happy” mantra.  loads of interviews with style icons, self-esteem-improving tips – every time i start to read this book, i feel compelled to throw my fist in the air in solidarity.

picture-72

testing out all of the fab samples i picked up at a kiehl’s earth day event on wednesday (celebrating the launch of celeb-designed bottles of their superbly restorative body lotion, for which 100% of the proceeds go to the waterkeeper alliance.  i was, admittedly, there for the free cookies.) – it will be a weekend of scrubs, gels, serums and general moisturizing goodness.

and maybe, if i’m really lucky, a cupcake.

have a wonderful weekend, all!

luxe or less: marni vs. target

we’re going to be talking a lot about florals in the next couple of weeks…after all, it’s spring, and florals are a perennial stand-by for the season.  but this year, the styling is a lot more hip and nontraditional…which i’m loving.  these bags are a great case in point.  i love the abstract leaf patterns, and they’re a great twist on a classic floral, which can get a little laura ashley.  (i do, however, love taking a really traditional floral pattern and mixing it with an ultra-mod design…something along the lines of this fab charlotte ronson dress, or that steven alan top we talked about.)

either of these bags would be a great way to bring a little of that hot spring floral into your life – i’d add one to a winter-friendly ensemble like slacks and a blouse to warm things up a bit.  your choice:  left is marni, $600 at net-a-porter; right is hayden-harnett, $49.99 at target.

so, which one would you choose:   luxe or less?

the best-laid plans….and some cheap thrills

i know, i said there would be some after-christmas-sale mentions at the very least over the last week.  and, well, there haven’t been.  but, in my defense, let me just say the following:

1, the after-christmas sales not only sucked this year, they were basically nonexistent.  i’ve decided everyone marked things down before christmas instead, so the after-christmas sales were that much more anti-climactic (less climatic? damn double-negatives).

2, do you ever get to the point that you’ve just shopped and shopped and shopped, and can shop no more?  i know…hard to imagine.  but i’m there.  and i needed to not shop for 5 minutes.  fortunately for all of you, i’m back on the horse…and have some lovely things to share next week, as well as a “top buys of 2008” post i’ll be sharing in the next few days, if i can get my act together.

3, on a personal level…well, the best way i can explain the past week is to send you off to read this.  yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

BUT, since this is, first and foremost, a shopping blog (and therefore, 95% of you care not a bit about my adventures in miscreant canines), i will remind you all that the thakoon for target collection hit stores over the weekend, and it’s actually the first go international collection i’ve liked since paul & joe.

i’m heavily in the market for patterned tees in anticipation of spring.  cardigans will be everywhere, and i seem to have become the official cardigan queen of the west coast, but i’m getting tired of all the monochrome in my wardrobe.  so, i’ll be stocking up on some fantastic floral and striped tees to layer underneath (particularly this one, which i anticipate aggressively stalking at local stores, since i was an idiot and did not buy it online before it was gone).  also, i have it on good authority that this floral trench is even cuter in person, which means it has serious potential to make the cut as my spring jacket.

(for the record, the hayden-harnett target collection was released as well….it’s generally disappointing, though i’m sort of curious about this print canvas version of their classic flight bag.  it has the potential to be a great carry-on, as it’s stylish and fun, but you won’t care a bit when the flight attendant forces you to jam it into the overhead compartment.)

happy new year’s eve, everyone!
