the F&F motherlode: shopbop and saks!

Friends, I have two very exciting things to say to you.

First, drumroll please…it’s Friends & Family time at Shopbop!

And if that isn’t enough excitement…it’s also Friends & Family time at Saks! (Granted, there’s a monster list of brand exclusions, but it’s still a steal unless you’re in the market for Prada or Hermes.)

I hardly know where to start with all the fantasy shopping I’m conducting in my head right now. But a few pieces that may well make their way onto my credit card:

From Shopbop: Yarnz Chic scarf, $130; LNA knit pencil skirt, $95; Elizabeth & James booties, $350.

From Saks: Vince sweater coat, $395; Burberry shearling jacket, $1,195; Michael Kors cropped tweed jacket, $195.

I know, I know. The Burberry jacket is a long shot. But hey, a girl’s got to have dreams!

What’s on your shopping list? Whether it’s fantasy or reality, I’m dying to know!

sneak peek: vince fall 2011

It’s my favorite time of year…fall lookbooks are starting to roll in! As always, Vince’s fall collection has me smitten. Relaxed silhouettes, classic styling and just the tiniest bit of edge. And maybe a bit out of my price range…especially all that lovely shearling. Still, it’s fun to dream.

Yes, even that wild cropped fur has me swooning. But I’ll admit it’s the camel car coat that has me double-checking my credit card balances. I can’t explain my obsession with camel, but I do know there’s just something about that buttery caramel shade that always feels so perfectly pulled together, even on your least pulled-together days.

Check out the rest of shopbop’s lookbook of the Fall 2011 Vince collection, and shop the pieces, right here.

styled alternatives: my off days

dear readers, i’m officially sick of winter. i’m sick of the constant drizzle, i’m sick of the wind, and – this is how you know it’s bad – i’m sick of my fall clothes.

it’s true.  the moment i feel that first crisp chill of fall, i race for my cashmere and my boots, and i layer my little heart out.  i’m a model of multi-toned, multi-textured goodness.  it’s a bit of work to put those multi-element ensembles together, sure, but i’m so excited to have my fall clothes back, i can’t resist the challenge…in fact, i relish it.

fast forward to the first day of march, and it’s enough.  i’m exhausted!  i’m still freezing, but all of my styling mojo is completely out the window.  and so, until spring rolls around, i’m afraid you’re going to see a lot more of me in ensembles that could only charitably be called socially acceptable outside your favorite gym.  fortunately, i’ve tracked down a few lounge basics stylish enough to brave the elements without thoroughly embarrassing myself.

naturally, we turn first to alternative apparel.  they are my definitive go-to for slouchy, comfy, casual pieces that i don’t have to feel guilty about wearing out of the house.  i spotted their slouchy eco-heather pullover the other day, and it’s an absolutely perfect, thin-but-warm fabric, body-skimming-but-cozy cut.  and it’s not cropped, for which i’m grateful.  bonus: it would be lovely layered over a striped button-down, if i ever get the energy again.  for a considerably larger sum, i could also nab this gorgeous vince cowl sweater (odd name, as i don’t see a cowl anywhere).  it’s considerably more polished, yet would also work wonderfully well with my sweats.

as for the trickier bottom half, these days it’s a good day if i reach for my most cozy, soft, broken-in jeans – my joe’s socialites, to be precise.  the rest of the time, i’m yearning for a leggings-worthy body, but as that’s not coming any time soon, i’ll grudgingly substitute one of the following:  my gap denim leggings (no, i will not use the “j” word), but only to be used in combination with a hip-skimming sweater and tall boots (the combination is key); or my alternative apparel lounge pants.

(a few notes about the lounge pants.  first, i realize it’s really not okay to wear these out.  particularly if worn with the matching alternative apparel sweatshirt.  that would be weird, even for me.  however, try the lounge pants with a slightly fitted, tunic length cashmere sweater, and i think you’ll find yourself sorely tempted to at least give “lounge chic” a try this weekend.)

as for styles, i personally prefer the chrissy (center) if i’m cold, and the eco-heather long pant (right) if i’m not.  both are insanely, unbelievably comfortable, and guaranteed to almost make you forget to care how you look leaving the house in sweats.  that reminds me…i need a new pair of those eco-heathers.

as for shoes, it’s all i can do not to leave the house in my ugg slippers (no, seriously…the other day, i got halfway to peet’s before i realized i was still wearing my slippers.  in my defense, i did immediately turn around to go home and change.  but still.)  so, i’m leaving a pair of these patagonia maha slip-ons by the front door, as a reminder to consider trading up to a considerably more respectable option.  these weigh literally nothing, and are as comfy as tennis shoes without the bulk, the laces or the soccer mom stigma.

rest assured, you’ll be hearing this same speech in august, when i’m so tired of my summer clothes, i’ll be regressing to nothing but tanks and short skirts.  but for now, do you have any words of encouragement to get me out of my style slump?  or are you suffering too?

my city by the bay

well hello, readers!  i missed you last week. but the whole time i was gone, i was taking furious notes of all the things i had to tell you about when i returned.  yes, i spent nearly all of last week revisiting my old stomping grounds in san francisco.  thank goodness the city is still as amazing as i remember…though i don’t miss that 9% sales tax!

i shopped and shopped, and then i shopped some more.  i got tees at H&M, mugs at jonathan adler, a tour of the new spring collection at michael kors, macarons (and way too much candy) at miette patisserie, made several trips to bloomingdales and barneys, neiman marcus and saks, and drank my weight in cappucinos at my favorite italian cafe.  and i topped it all off with lunch at neiman marcus’ rotunda restaurant, quite possibly my favorite lunch spot ever.  how can you not love a huge stained glass dome, birds-eye view of union square, all the popovers you can eat, and live models trailing couture past your table.

i also got to catch up with several of my dear friends that i left behind in san francisco (hi to A and J!), and spend some much-needed quality time with my sweet mom.  and i finally (finally!) got to meet the lovely connie, who’s been my e-friend for years, and is now a real live in-person friend.  love that!

sigh….i’m exhausted just reading that!  yes, i had missed my city.  and i worked very, very hard to hit all the spots i missed while i was gone.  i picked up so many new tips, brands and ideas that i can’t wait to share…but for now, i have to start with what i brought home, don’t you agree?

my big splurge was this amazing leather blazer by vince – on super markdown at barneys, i might add.  vince calls it their ‘paper leather,’ and it really is amazingly thin, light and matte – plus it has knit panels on the underside of the sleeve and along the sides, which makes it ultra-comfy and perfect for layering.  this is last fall’s style (which i prefer for being infinitely less trendy), but if you want to see the current incarnation with its asymmetrical lapels (also very cute), it’s right here.  i can hardly wait to start pairing it with cropped jeans and frilly spring dresses.  you know, something like…

this ella moss version i picked up (also on the barneys supersale).  it’s not online any longer (the hazard of buying on sale…), but this one is awfully similar.  just imagine it with short sleeves and no black mesh detailing.  i’m already plotting to pair it with black tights and short boots now (and that fabulous new jacket!), and a chunky nude sandal come spring.  i love that there’s a bit of black in this print – it keeps it just shy of being girly overkill, and will make it so easy to layer with darker colors.

and last, i couldn’t resist these gorgeous bronze (really more of a coppery shade) mirrored cutout flats from belle by sigerson morrison – they were a last-minute treat from neiman marcus.  i love these as an alternative to sandals (especially when the pedicure’s looking a little less than perfect), and can’t wait to use them to dress up cutoff shorts or boyfriend jeans this summer.

other than that (ha!), i was pretty restrained.  i passed up oh so many luscious handbags, and managed to avert my eyes from the jewelry department every time i went to barneys.  but even with all that self-control (ha again), it was an ab fab trip, and i can’t wait to do it again.

how was your weekend?

the curse of vince

it is almost frightening how reliable i am when it comes to falling for sweaters by vince.  i pick them out of a lineup as my constant favorite just as easily as i immediately locate the most expensive item in any store i visit.

Picture 4

once again, i honed in on a piece in an email i received from tobi, and once again, it’s fabulous cashmere loveliness from vince.  which, sadly, translates to being way out of my budget ($245, in this case).  but wouldn’t this be the perfect understated holiday piece?  the burgundy is festive without being obvious, and the draping gives you the drama you’d normally look for from sequins or ruffles.

i’d pair this with a black pencil skirt or a tuxedo pant for a party, and feel absolutely confident in my chic alternative to the christmas sweater…but it’s also going to be killer with jeans and my tan suede boots in january.  hmm, if i’m lucky, maybe it will go on sale.

friends and family at shopbop (and some other steals)

shopbop-ff

i am loooving how generous shopbop has been with the coupons this year!  through thursday, score 25% off sitewide (on full-priced items) with code INTHEFAMILY25 because you are my friends, and shopbop is practically family.  or something like that.

now, what to buy?  well, here’s a little taste of what i’m craving this season:

picture-12  picture-10  picture-11

a slouchy, distressed, oh-so-casual hobo, like these by giorgio brato (i’m obsessed!) or this MbyMJ version.

some effortless spring dresses – perhaps this denim version from vince, or maybe i’ll splurge on this amazing dress by milly that’s been on the must-have list for a month.  i’ll be wearing it to every fete in town!

and, some big, bold jewelry to pull any look together…this gold cuff from kenneth jay lane has been on my list for a while now.

but mostly, i’m dying to know what you’re buying – spill in the comments!

ps…to get the scoop on all of the other fab sales & discounts that arrived in my inbox today, check out my twitter-ness!

deal of the day: saks labor day markdowns

shopping truth:  after a promotional discount code shall quickly follow massive markdowns.  case in point:  both shopbop and saks have cut prices on all of their pre-fall pieces just days after their respective “shop and save” events.  typical.  the shopbop sale wasn’t thrilling me, but saks has me all aflutter.

hurry over now to score this morning’s 40%+ markdowns on early fall pieces i’ve been dying to own, like this vince boyfriend cardigan i mentioned a few weeks ago, and this gorgeous quilted tory burch leather jacket.  and the dresses…my god, the dresses.  this robert rodriguez is an amazing classic, and a piece you can wear year-round.  or this lovely DVF that’s making me oh-so-happy right now.  i even love this elizabeth & james wilde vest jacket – so preppy, but so cool…and about 60% off, so it’s actually reasonably priced now!  but move fast…the good pieces are going to be gone the moment i find my american express card!
