make over my house: the lookbook

{Editor’s Note: As I mentioned last week, I’ve teamed up with one of my absolute favorite home stores, Manor Fine Wares, and a few other wonderful sponsors you’ll be hearing about, to complete a total redesign of my main living areas.}

As I told you all last week, when I moved into my new house, I needed serious help transforming it into the light, airy, clean space I had in mind. Luckily, the amazing people at Manor Fine Wares came to my rescue!

I had absolutely no idea what to expect when I first met with Shannon (my designer extraordinaire) – after all, I’d never had a design consultation. So, I came armed with lots of adjectives about what I wanted (and didn’t want) the space to be, color preferences and loads of photos.

What actually happened? She walked into the room, and immediately said “Yeah, this isn’t working, is it?” and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. Sadly the biggest offender in the new space was my beloved bird chair (you can see it in the “before” pics). I positively adore that chair, but it was taking over the room in the new house. Shannon’s immediate reaction made it clear: the birds had to go.

Next, it was time to talk about musts. What furniture has to stay? Well, the sofa…because I’m too cheap to replace it, and I love it. And my secretary desk/china hutch in the dining space. And a few pieces of art that I could never part with. But beyond that, I was flexible. And what is a “must have” in the new space? The husband’s recliner…he’s a miserable mope without it. Also, said recliner must face the television. Marriage/life lesson: some battles just aren’t worth fighting.

Beyond that, we talked more about mood and feel than specifics – I told Shannon that my last place had been cozy and filled with books, knickknacks and bright art, with color and clutter everywhere. This time, I wanted a clean slate. Something soothing to my eyes, very little visual clutter, even less color, and a light, airy feel. Urban beach house, without the cheesy ocean-themed accessories, I told her.

And this is what she gave me (click the arrows to see the full lookbook):

Pretty wonderful, right? (I’m especially in love with that souk rug from Rugs USA) One of the biggest challenges in this space for me was layout. I was really resisting the traditional placement of the dining table (it felt like a huge blockade when you walked in the door), had no idea what to do with the alcoves on either side of the fireplace, and was stumped by which direction the couch should face. Shannon solved every problem. And honestly, just having that voice of authority to tell me this was the solution was pretty priceless.

I’d have never, ever come up with those chests of drawers flanking the fireplace. And it would have taken me ages to realize that my round dining table was never going to work in this space. But Shannon just knew…and saved me months of agonizing over what would have made this room work.

Plus, take note: not all of the pieces in that lookbook are from Manor. My budget precluded the full-on, high-end design orgy I had in mind. My total budget for the project (yep, I’ll just tell you) was $7,000. Not cheap, certainly, but not even a drop in the bucket compared to most design clients. But Shannon didn’t balk. She went to West Elm. She went to Cost Plus. She went to Rugs USA. And she found pieces that blended seamlessly with her picks from Manor.

Next week? A little Q&A session with Ms. Shannon, where we’ll nab all of her best design secrets! Stay tuned.

sponsored: a reason to smile from dreyer’s

{Editor’s Note: The following is sponsored content, but it’s for a good cause, and I loved every bite minute of it!}

Sometimes, my job is pretty wonderful. Like last week, when I got an email from Dreyer’s, that went a little something like this:

Dear Becki,

Please, go buy some ice cream – on us – and help us spread the word about this amazing charitable project we’re undertaking!

Um, twist my arm! Which means I got to spend Sunday night doing the only thing one should do on a Sunday: make ice cream sundaes!

This was an exhaustively (and deliciously) researched story, but in the end, I landed on a masterpiece: Dreyer’s Slow-Churned Butter Pecan ice cream, waffle bowl, hot butterscotch, freshly toasted almonds, whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry. (Honestly, I think sprinkles belong on just about everything.) The maple flavor in the Butter Pecan (which the hubs ended up stealing from me, it was so good) and the butterscotch did some amazing things to that waffle bowl. I highly recommend giving it a try.

So, about the charity part. Dreyer’s has created a program called A Reason to Smile, which is designed to help with cleft palate surgeries…an amazing cause. To pitch in, take a pic of you (or someone you love) wearing a big ice cream smile, and upload it to Dreyer’s Facebook page. Dreyer’s will donate $5 for every pic, and you can score coupons for free ice cream (!). By the end of the summer, the goal is to give away 25,000 scoops of ice cream, capture 25,000 ice cream smiles and gift 500 surgeries/smiles to children in need.

Fine Print: Dreyer’s® Slow Churned Light Ice Cream is churned slowly for all the rich & creamy taste of regular ice cream, but with half the fat and one-third fewer calories. Now that’s a reason to smile. Give a smile with Operation Smile!

smc giveaway: the perfect white tee!

{ENTRIES CLOSED – Thanks for playing, everyone!}

It’s not quite a four-day week, but with Memorial Day on the horizon, I suspect most of us are counting down to the three-day weekend (and already planning to cut out early on Friday). In celebration, I have to tell you about my latest, just-in-time-for-summer find – maybe the best new find in my closet. It’s the perfect – the absolutely, undeniably perfect – white tee.

Oh, and how about if I set it up so that you can have one too?

I’m not one of those girls with a closet full of white tees – in fact, I almost never buy them, because I’m ridiculously picky in this department. Fitted white tees just aren’t always that flattering. Tight white tees are a terrible idea, and the looser versions always seem to have that light, drapey fabric that skims the body in all the wrong places.

But then, one day, I saw a Lucky editor mention that her hands-down favorite white tee was from Eileen Fisher. Now, I’ll admit, I was a skeptic. Eileen Fisher? You mean those super flowy styles you usually see on, well, the more mature set? It couldn’t be. And yet, the tee looked beautiful. So, I had to investigate – and the folks at Eileen Fisher were kind enough to make it happen.

Turns out if you go down a size, Eileen Fisher’s pieces take on a whole new life. Friends, this tee – it’s called the U-Neck Tee in linen jersey – truly is perfect.

The color is just the tiniest bit softer than a pure white, so it’s infinitely more flattering. It’s made of linen jersey that somehow magically drapes like linen without wrinkling. It has a shirt-tail hem and a barely A-line cut, so it grazes skin and creates a waist, but covers backsides and tummies. The neckline dips low enough to suggest without making you panic about your bra choice. And the sleeve is this flattering cut somewhere between a cap sleeve and a full short sleeve, which makes your arm instantly slimmer.

Now that I have my holy grail white tee, I’ve been thinking a lot about some of the best ways to wear it. A few things that come to mind:

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

  1. Slouchy front-tuck, a chunky black belt, frayed cut-off shorts (eek, 70% off!) and a strappy flat sandal. Add black Ray-Bans and a long gold necklace to polish it up.
  2. Loose and easy over just about any colored skinny jean, a great heel (or ballet flat) in a contrasting color. Add some chunky jewelry and a mini-shoulder bag to make it yours.
  3. Fully tucked into a high-waist trouser jean, skinny belt, black or navy blazer, bright wedge. Add a day clutch and a stack of bangles, to tone it down.
  4. Loosely tucked into a maxiskirt, a chunky belt, your favorite maxi and tan flat sandals. Add…nothing at all.
  5. Slouchy and loose over a skinny printed pant (or a floaty maxi skirt), a leather moto jacket, black ankle boots. Add your favorite statement bag and let it steal the show.

You know, just a few ideas to get you started. The only downside, if there is one? It’s only available in-store at Eileen Fisher, and…well, it’s $128. So, how about if I fix all that by giving one of you your very own?

To enter, it’s the usual drill. Just leave a comment on this post, telling me how much you love this tee. For a bonus entry, share the love! Tweet about the contest (mention @shoppingscardio and @EileenFisher so we can keep track), share on Facebook (find Eileen Fisher’s Facebook page right here), blog it, Pin it…whatever form of social media makes you happy (just be sure to link to the contest and Eileen Fisher). Then just come back and leave another comment, letting me know how you shared. I’ll close entries Friday night, and announce a winner. Max of 3 total entries per person, US/Canada winners only.

Good luck!

sponsored: whiten up at kohl’s

{Editor’s Note: The following content is sponsored by Kohl’s, and you can read all about the gory details at the end. That said, the content is 100% my opinion, which I’m never shy about sharing.}

To wrap up our Kohl’s fashion series, they asked me to tackle the trickiest spring trend of all: white.

Confession time, friends: until this spring, I didn’t own a single white piece of clothing aside from my wedding veil and a few white tees, neither of which see the light of day on any regular basis. I find white to be terrifyingly unflattering, particularly for those of us with pale skin and non-model physiques. But every year, as the weather warms up, I wish I was that girl that could parade around in skinny white jeans, or a sweet little spaghetti-strap white eyelet dress. I even go so far as to try them on. And every year, I leave the store defeated…and depressed.

But it’s occurred to me that it doesn’t have to be that way. There are solutions! First things first: the appropriate underpinnings are key, friends. Remember: nude, not white – and either wear a seamless boy short or a thong to avoid the dreaded VPL.

Next, instead of white skinny jeans (impossible with even a hint of cellulite), try a crisp white trouser. It works in casual or business settings, and you can seek out a pair that’s either (a) lined or (b) cut wide enough to save you from…shall we say “overexposure”. I tracked down a perfect version from Apt. 9 at Kohl’s at a price so low, you won’t even be scared to wear them (nothing like leaning up against your car to rummage through your bag while wearing brand new white pants). The cut is flattering, the fabric is sturdy, and they even come with a silver skinny belt you’ll wear with a dozen other things.

To make it work, pair the pants with a light top (anything too dark can be jarring against white) – think pastels, but nothing too saccharine sweet. I love the pleats on this pale yellow tank from LC Lauren Conrad – they’re right on trend, and the forgiving cut will help you gloss over any less desirable areas, while bringing out the best in a smaller bust. Top with a dark denim jacket like this one from Lee, a stack of bangles and a wedge espadrille to add the perfect dose of casual chic.

And, once again, we’re well under the $100 mark…which means you’ll have plenty left over to nab this adorable little Simply Vera Vera Wang cardigan I spotted while I was at Kohl’s. If I could in any way pull off chartreuse (sadly, it’s not for the pale girls of the world), it’d have been mine in a flash!

sponsored: shine at kohl’s

{Editor’s Note: The following content is sponsored by Kohl’s, and you can read all about the gory details at the end. That said, the content is 100% my opinion, which I’m never shy about sharing.}

Welcome to part two of my Kohl’s shopping adventure! To catch you up from last time, Kohl’s challenged me to pick out an outfit from their spring collections that worked with two of spring’s hottest trends. I am many things, but I’m never one to back down from a shopping challenge. You’ve already heard all about my efforts to embrace bold color, but this time, we’re talking shine! Paillettes, sequins or beads, sparkle is big right now. Sadly, while I admire the dickens out of the look on others, it’s a tricky style for me. Blame my casual lifestyle, but I just feel a little ridiculous walking my dogs in a sequined miniskirt.

Fortunately, there was no shortage of shine to choose from at Kohl’s. With new partnerships with Jennifer Lopez and Rock & Republic, it was actual work to avoid shine in many cases. Naturally, I ran from the rhinestones at breakneck pace, and headed to my safe zone: Chaps.

Sure enough, I found exactly what I was after: a nautical sweater in navy with silver metallic stripes. Just right! To keep the focus on the shine, I added a pair of white straight-leg jeans – a crazy flattering pair, in fact. I’m a huge fan of not spending a ton on white jeans…they’ll only break your heart.

To finish it off (and take the edge off the Nantucket vibe I was rocking thus far), I added a bold, chunky necklace from Simply Vera Vera Wang – pearls, rhinestones and chains, thank you! – to increase my shine factor, and my own silver ballet flats. The final look was still more Upper East Side than hip downtown club, but that’s much more my style. And the whole look was well under $100. Pretty impressive!

My next (and final) Kohl’s installment will be all about wearing white…even if you’re not a supermodel. Don’t miss it!

sponsored: bold color at kohl’s

Update: Kohl’s has switched things up on their site, but if you’d still like to read all about my Bold Color adventures, you can find a cached version of my post right here.

Editor’s Note: The following content is sponsored by Kohl’s, and you can read all about the gory details at the end. That said, the content is 100% my opinion, as always.

You know I’m always up for a style challenge. So when I got an email from Kohl’s asking me to come over to their store and put together a couple of looks based on the latest trends – for less than $100 – I couldn’t resist. While it wasn’t the easiest thing I’ve ever done (ahem, budgets are not my strong suit), I think I pulled it together in the end:

Not bad, right? Head over to their site and check out all the details, won’t you? (It’s over on the right side of the page, and I’m the fourth blogger down…).

Oh, and prepare yourselves…there’s a second installment of this experiment coming in a week or two. Start getting excited!

smc valentine giveaway: bevin designs!

{ENTRIES NOW CLOSED…thanks for playing, everyone!}

I am so excited this morning, friends…I have a Valentine for you! And trust me, it’s much better than candy hearts and overpriced flowers. But before we get to the swag, I’d like you to meet the crazy-talented Bevin Designs. Beware…coveting is likely to ensue:

How could you not fall for pieces that pretty? I am so in love with this collection – the designs are so substantial and statement-making, but still utterly wearable. Plus, every piece is hand-forged from bronze, sterling or copper – no fillers, thank you – so they’re sure to last forever. I was lucky enough to snag that beautiful faceted necklace above (though I picked the ring version…and talk about a massive rock on my finger!). Truly, as gorgeous as these photos are, they don’t do her designs justice. I’ve been wearing it nonstop since it arrived.

Designer Colleen Smith crafts each and every one of these beauties entirely by hand, right here in Portland. No molds here…she’s an actual metalsmith! How bad-ass is that?

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Colleen and I thought it was the perfect time to give the gift of jewelry to you, friends. That’s right, Bevin Designs wants to be your valentine! See that beautiful bronze cuff up there? Wait…let me give you a closer look:

It doesn’t get more classic, or more perfect, than a bronze cuff. This one is hefty and has the most beautiful patina that carries it effortlessly from casual to dress without missing a beat. It’s a jewelry staple if ever there was one. And Bevin wants it to be all yours.

This is a Facebook contest, friends…so, to win, all you have do is “like” Bevin Design on Facebook (while you’re at it, “like” me too if you want, but no pressure – that part’s optional). Then leave a quick comment letting me know, and you’ll be entered to win! And, since I’m feeling extra generous, you can have a bonus entry if you let your friends on Twitter know about the contest as well (just come back and leave a second comment letting me know).

One entry + one bonus entry per person. The contest closes Sunday night (2/5) and we’ll announce a winner Monday morning (2/6). Good luck, friends!

sponsored: l’occitane

As a kid, I remember always being in awe of the L’Occitane store in the mall. It smelled like a lavender field, and everything looked so sophisticated and beautiful! I revisited one of their shops recently, and I can tell you nothing’s changed. I still get that “everything’s better in French” feeling when I walk in, and I still am instantly transported to my happy place (yes, my happy place is almost always somewhere in France).

Best of all, I’m actually old enough to try all the products when I visit now. I love that everything makes me feel just as sophisticated as I had always imagined they would. But now that I care more about content, I’m glad to see that L’Occitane’s products manage to give you that happy feeling while providing completely effective, natural skincare (many are even 100% organic), made from essential oils, extracts, and all sorts of other plant-based goodness. Seriously, their ingredients page reads like a botanical dictionary.

While I love everything, it’s the shea butter hand cream I always gravitate to first…if only because I love the packaging. But mostly, I admit, I’m still in it for that delicious scent of lavender when you walk in the door.
