SMC interviews: lauren moffatt

i have been so excited to introduce this latest interview!  lauren moffatt is one of the hottest contemporary designers in fashion right now – her looks are coveted by everyone from cameron diaz to sofia bush, and with good reason.  lauren has an amazing ability to design pieces that are both relaxed and sophisticated, and completely unlike anything else out there.  i jumped at the chance to chat with her, and find out exactly what makes this superstar designer tick!

ShoppingsMyCardio:  How did you get started in fashion?  Tell us your story!

Lauren Moffatt:  For as long as I can remember, I’ve looked forward to getting up in the morning and figuring out what I was going to wear.  I began making clothes when what I wanted wasn’t in the marketplace.

SMC:  I have to ask – I’ve heard that you once lived on a boat?  There must be a story there – I’d love to hear how that came about, and how it’s influenced you (if at all!).

LM:  I did!  I lived on a sailboat in the Hudson River.  It was such a fun time of my life, and really enabled me, financially, to start the business.  The laid-back, bohemian lifestyle definitely influenced my aesthetic.

SMC:  Your designs are incredibly popular with the celebrity set – do you design with that group in mind?

LM:  I don’t.  I design for myself.  Luckily, the pieces speak for themselves, and have become popular with stylists and celebrities.

SMC:  I love your designs because I think you have a really strong point of view.  Can you tell us a little about where your designs are coming from, and who your ideal customer is?  Are you designing for a certain woman, or a lifestyle, or something else entirely?

LM:  I design things that I would like to wear.  They are effortless-looking, while still being special.  I never like looking too “put together,” and our collection reflects that.  Our customers are women who value not wearing something everyone else has.  They mix old with new, messy with neat, and the outcome is just a cool look.

SMC:  When you actually sit down to design, what do you need around you to be creative?

LM:  A cup of tea!

SMC:  Tell us about your fall collection – what are some of the key styles you’re most excited about, and what’s your favorite piece from the fall line?

LM:  The high-waisted skirt, the boyfriend blazer and the ladylike minidress are all great silhouettes for fall.  My favorite piece has to be our long wool military coat!

SMC:  I’d love a little sneak peek at spring trends – can you give us an idea of what to expect from your line?

LM:  A lot of gray, with pops of bright color.  Also, you’ll see short silhouettes, but more body-conscious looks.

SMC:  Other than your own designs, what are your three favorite items in your closet right now?

LM:  A fabulous Stella McCartney dress, a pair of perfect vintage Levi’s, and a hand-printed silk scarf from a New York flea market.

SMC:  If you could design for any person, living or not, who would you choose?

LM:  Kate Moss

SMC:  What one style secret do you wish you could teach every woman out there

LM:  Accessories make the biggest difference in your look.  It’s so important not to over-accessorize, but what a great scarf, or bangle, or even just a fabulous pair of earrings will do for your outfit is huge.

SMC:  Last, a few easy ones:

  • Eggs or waffles?  Eggs (but Benedict!)
  • Polaroid or digital?  I’d love to say Polaroid, it’s so much more romantic, but digital.
  • High tea or happy hour?  Definitely high tea.
  • Shorts or skirts?  Skirts
  • Go out or stay in?  Go out!!

lauren, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us and share a few fashion secrets! you can check out lauren’s entire fall line at her website, or shop styles online at shopbop!

designer 101: rozae nichols

i got an email from the lovely kate boutique yesterday, showcasing the newest brand into their fantastic boutique: rozae nichols. nicols is an LA native, but her pieces have such a worldly, ethnic vibe – i love the drape, the unique cuts and styling, and the fabrics, which might just be the best part of her collections.

this gorgeous dress ($488) is a perfect example – the cut is fantastic, and the styling is inherently flattering for just about every shape. but that fabric and sash really steal the show.

this yellow halter dress ($518) is the perfect summer addition. the styling is fantastic – i think halter dresses are tough to get right, but nichols has nailed it. the details are effortless (literally – the belt and gorgeous wooden button mean no accessorizing necessary). and that ikat-inspired fabric is incredibly of-the-moment, yet the rest of the dress doesn’t scream trendy.

the dresses are perfection – but i even love her basics. take this jersey tank ($250), for example. proof that names can be deceiving – i would have no trouble wearing this simple “tank” to a dinner party, but it makes a perfect weekday work option, and a perfect denim companion as well.

ditto for this beautiful, seemingly classic black sweater. but take a closer look at those details – the neck tie makes this piece instantly sophisticated and effortlessly styled, and the chic neckline and contrast trim keep this piece unique, and well worth its $160 sale price (see that? you knew i’d have a sale piece in there somewhere…).

check out the full rozae nichols lines at kate boutique or over at shopjake – i’ve definitely found a new designer to love. hope i’m not the only one!

designer 101: amalialad

the lovely and insightful clothes-pin has turned me on to a new designer who has me completely excited. amalialad (dalia lama spelled backward) is designed by janis stemmermann, and her pieces are just genius. so original, great color combos and silhouettes, and the price points are high, but not impossible, like so many new lines.

pieces are still a bit tough to find online, but here are a few of my favorites:

i’m obsessed with this darling school top. love the belt, love the sassy orange color, and love the versatility – this would be amazing with jeans, a skirt or even as a shell under a suit – i’m thinking grey pinstripe would be amazing.

if you like the shape of the school top, check out the school dress. great opportunity to try out the brand without breaking the bank, and i can see this dress being endlessly versatile. it’s tailored enough it would work as a tunic or as a dress, and it would be darling under a sweater jacket while it’s cold this fall. best of all, i managed to track this one down on sale for $123!

this pop quiz cardigan is a bargain at $150 – i love the idea of mixing it with a bright t-shirt and jeans for a casual saturday. and the fiddler cardigan would be another great basic – pair it with a dress trouser for work, or layer it over a long tank with jeans for a great weekend look. (you can find it in a gorgeous burgundy color here.)

and i love this ruffle kimono sweater – it would be such a great “throw on over anything” option to have in your closet.

as i said, i had a little bit of a struggle tracking pieces down, but you can find several at basic boutique, anthropologie, and goldyn. but my pick is basic boutique, as using code People20 will get you 20% off merchandise on their site, including sale items! plus, the folks over there are really quite fabulous to deal with – i love it when an online shop really manages to make the shopping experience a great one, and basic boutique does it very well!

designer 101: candela nyc

i admit, the term “new vintage” is one that makes me crack up a little bit…and i really shy away from using it. really, all it means is “we found a way to get you to pay full price for vintage-looking clothes…we are so clever!” but with such a strong 1970s and 1980s influence shining through, i can’t really come up with a better description for the new pieces from up-and-comer candela nyc, so i guess “new vintage” can be a good thing after all!

candela NYC strikes me as a line that definitely has room to grow (the pieces are universally not quite tailored enough for my tastes), but i love the aesthetic, and i’m excited to see what they come up with in future seasons.

right now, i’m loving this gorgeous deco top, which would make for a fabulous holiday ensemble with jeans, slacks, or even just under a blazer. plus, i’d like to officially thank the designer for not deciding this top is a dress, just because everyone else is doing it this fall. the sequins and tunic shape are really on trend right now, it’s true – but the deco design is so classic and unique. i really think this would grow up to be one of those timeless pieces in your wardrobe that’s always in vogue.

also, while i have to admit that i normally have a pretty strong fear of the shorter boot (stemming probably from the sweater boots i wouldn’t take off in junior high), these lovely leather boots are hitting me in all of my happy places.

the cognac color is fabulous, i love the ankle detail, and the shaft of these beauties is high enough that i wouldn’t be walking around all day dreading the oh-so-unappealing look in which you cross your legs when you sit, and your pants are higher than the top of your boot (an irrationally strong peeve of mine). i think these are a safe bet for those looking for that pants-only boot option. and again, they have that fun, sort of vintage-y vibe that i think will keep them in style long past their trendier counterparts. for $300, if the leather’s as soft and yummy as it looks, that’s a pretty reasonable investment boot.

as i said, i think they have some growing up to do, but there are some great seeds here (for example, i’m loving the bianca tunic, but want it to be a bit less shapeless for a holiday look).

you can check out more from candela NYC at active endeavors, and i’m thrilled to let everyone know that they’ve been nice enough to offer shoppingsmycardio readers a 20% discount sitewide with code “cardio”!

designer 101: hope and glorie

i spotted a piece by hope and glorie in a recent in style, and just had a hunch i was going to love the rest of the designer’s line. sure enough…after a bit of digging (they’re still relatively new to the scene), it turns out the masterminds behind the label have accomplished the impossible: chic, well-cut, well-thought clothing that’s beloved by celebrities…at prices that are actually reasonable.

crazy, i know.

designed by a pair of sisters, the line launched their first collection for spring ’07, so you get the benefit of getting in before their pricing goes off the charts.

the blouse i first noticed is this keyhole top (above), which comes in 3 different color combos. the most versatile is probably that black-and-white version, though the white-and-purple would be a great way to add color to a casual outfit.

but then i started looking at the line a bit more, and there are actually a lot of really covetable pieces…all well under $200, which is all but unheard of when you couple that phrase with with “as seen on jessica alba.” check out this darling ruffle cardigan – it’d be just the thing to add some fun to a basic black pant, or to take the severity out of a pencil skirt. the off-center placket gives it such great detail, and makes it wearable as a cardigan or just as a top. plus, that shade of blue is going to look amazing on just about everyone. love it, can’t do without it, will be buying it as soon as i finish posting here.

and, last but not least, it really is time to start thinking about those holiday dresses. their
halter dress in black and gold
gives you just enough detail to keep the black from being basic, just enough skin to keep it sexy without giving away the store, but the cut is so simple and classic that you’ll have this staple in your closet for years. i love the dash of spandex mixed into the silk – it’ll keep you dancing the night away even after that second glass of eggnog. and, again, under $200.

keep an eye on these ladies: i have a feeling we’re only going up from here! so far, couture candy seems to have the best selection of hope and glorie goods i could come up with, so it’s well worth a stroll through their site to see what else strikes your fancy.

shoppingsmycardio interview: jennifer tuton

i have been so excited to talk about this designer…i’ve literally been making myself a little giddy with anticipation. jennifer tuton designs absolutely amazing jewelry, right here in my hometown of san francisco. she has such impeccable taste when it comes to her designs, i couldn’t wait to pick her brain!

SMC: How did you get started designing jewelry? Tell us your story!

JT: After college I worked in an advertising agency. By the time three years passed, I realized I could no longer fight the urge to be more creative in my career. I gave my letter of resignation. What seemed like the biggest decision in my life (at the time), led me to a series of part time jobs. One of which was hand painting on barrettes (using toothpicks!). I called them ‘Jenniclips,’ and there my business was born. I designed every hair clip imaginable—sparkly bobby pins, hand painted barrettes, crystal wrapped clips and ornate ponytail holders. As my business began to unfold, I kept asking “what else can I make?” and that led me into jewelry making. At that time, I moved from Boston to San Francisco (1998) and my jewelry line really started to evolve and take shape. Soon thereafter I’d made a Crystal Cluster Ring that was featured in In Style Magazine. To this moment my business is constantly shifting and changing and unraveling…what will it be next?

SMC: I love the fact that your pieces are so unique – you aren’t afraid to play around with color and shape, which makes your designs really stand out. Can you talk a little bit about your design philosophy?

JT: I have always had a passion for color, every since I was a kid. I played a lot with watercolors and painted the most amazing trees! Reds and browns and greens and yellow! There were no rules! In my own work today, I create from the same type of chaos. I have all these supplies in front of me: beads, wire, tools, pens, sketches, and then I begin putting the parts together. What would this look like? Gems next to gems, different shades and shapes, jumbled or neat, asymmetrical or balanced…this evokes a feeling or nostalgia…and then VOILA! CREATION!

SMC: I’d love to hear about your creative process when you actually sit down to design a piece. Do you just start playing with stones, or do you get a mental picture of a piece before you even begin? Are most of your pieces filling a hole you see in the collection, or is it more a question of a design just sticking in your head and begging to be made?

JT: Sometimes I sit down and know exactly what “look” I’d like to create. In that moment I have a vision or an idea of what I’d like the piece to look like—and I make it quickly and effortlessly. Mostly I sit at my desk, surrounded by my gems and tools and wire, and in the silence I begin playing: placing beads next to beads and it’s almost like I’m in a trance. Anything is possible in that moment…and some of my most admired pieces emerge from that space. Ultimately, there is no form or structure of how the creative process takes place for me. It’s ever new and ever changing, and usually starts with a question, like “What would I like to create today?”

SMC: What piece from your collection is your favorite (we know you have one!)? And what one piece would you say is a “must have” for someone new to your designs?

JT: One of my favorites are my Gemstone Branch Earrings. They are quirky, intricate and organic—they take some time to actually make them—while still being very chic, unique and sparkly. I love sparkly. What woman doesn’t? As much as I love being up with the trends, I like that these particular earrings are timeless, which allows them to be “in style” every season.

SMC: Where do you find inspiration?

JT: Designers like Missoni that work a color palette like none other, that’s where a lot of my inspiration comes from. I love seeing what the big designers are creating. With that being said, I can also look at a country-side and it evokes something in me that ignites an idea. I was driving to Reno (of all places!) last November, and when I was going through Tahoe I couldn’t help but notice the incredible mass of trees, like stalks of asparagus tightly packaged, with pointy tops. I was bombarded by the hues of mocha, and emerald, hints of garnet and yellow. It’s all right there in front of us.

SMC: What jewelry are you wearing today?

JT: I have been really into “layering,” and can’t seem to get away from wearing more than one necklace. I keep it simple with a dainty gold necklace and then layer it with a longer one either with shimmery discs, or a locket, or one with gemstones that add a flicker of color. I love the subtlety of sparkle or color or design that pulls people in, and makes them wonder “What is she wearing? I want that!”

SMC: How would you describe your personal style? Tell us about your favorite, no-fail outfit.

JT: Like most women, I am drawn to beautiful shoes, great-fitting jeans, and a simple top. I always like to have one piece of my outfit STAND OUT from the rest. Whether it’s a top with a ruffle, or a gold sandal, or a great handbag or belt. If my clothing is the canvas, then my jewelry is the paint, bumping it up a notch. I’m into simple and chic.

SMC: What one style secret do you wish you could teach every woman out there?

JT: Ask YOUR BODY what IT wishes to wear, don’t just wear what everyone else is wearing. When I go into a store before I buy something I ask “Body, would you like to wear this? Would it feel good on your skin? Does it make you happy?” My personal style is conveyed when I feel comfortable in my own skin, that’s when I’m walking confidently and strutting my stuff. When I wear clothes and accessories that are personal favorites, it makes me smile and pleases my spirit, which is always, in my point of view, “in style.”

see? i told you she was fabulous! i was first introduced to her designs when i came across that gorgeous turquoise necklace i teased you all with over the weekend (which, by the way, you can find here). i’m still coveting it desperately, and i think i’ll be adding it to my jewelry box before long. the thing i love about all of her designs is that she manages to keep her pieces really unique, while making sure they’re still very wearable in a “real” woman’s everyday life. that’s something that is always a struggle for me: keeping my jewelry interesting and fashion-forward, without it being too trendy or over-the-top. but jennifer’s pieces are always a safe bet – they have the perfect amount of “wow” factor.

some of my favorites are pictured throughout this post: i absolutely love the multi-disc necklace ($165), which is impossibly versatile. the waterfall gem necklace ($170) is just the perfect thing to make any ensemble suddenly fabulous, especially on a day when you feel like your outfit just isn’t “popping” the way the you want it to. the 24K gold leaf charm necklace ($130) would be a fabulous “everyday” necklace – i’m pretty sure if i owned it, i’d never take it off. the aquamarine linked necklace ($170) is the ideal modern version of a strand of pearls – picture it with a classic white shirt and slacks, or a gorgeous little black dress! and i want a handful of her stunning stacking rings!

do your jewelry box a favor, and take a few minutes to drool over the goods on her website. if you find something (or several somethings) you can’t live without, email jennifer at [email protected], let her know what struck your fancy, and she’ll be more than glad to send it right out to you! also, tobi has a few pieces that aren’t on jennifer’s website (including that gorgeous turquoise necklace i adore, as well as a red quartz necklace that’s just amazing), so you can check her work out there as well!

(PS…a great big thanks to jennifer for taking the time to tell all of the shoppingsmycardio readers about her gorgeous designs!)
