2014, bring it on

new-year

| Images via my friends at boohoo, who clearly know how to party! |

Wishing you the happiest, healthiest year yet, my friends! 2014 will be filled with good things, I just know it. I don’t go in for resolutions, but the idea of making a real effort to slow down, put away my iPhone and look around occasionally is feeling very right to me just now. And maybe finally learning to bake a loaf of bread.

However you celebrate, may your year be filled with light, love, and some very fancy shoes.

asked and answered: what to wear to that holiday party

Some of you told me you’d be curious about my advice for holiday party attire. And, since this is officially the week for holiday parties and I know I’m you’re fretting about what to wear, I thought I’d pass on some of my favorite “rules of thumb” for holiday party outfits. Read on

the how-to: bundle up in style

When one of you (hi, Amy!) suggested that I talk a little about bundling up for winter, I got pretty excited. The truth is, winter is my season! While I hate the cold, I absolutely adore cold weather style. So, today I thought I’d dispense a few of my favorite tips for staying chic no matter the weather. Read on

must reads: november

I have to warn you: there’s only one fiction title on this month’s Must Reads list. Not that there isn’t wonderful fiction to be found – my shelves are groaning with books I’ve yet to read – but this time of year is when the really wonderful eye candy books start to appear. The best cookbooks, design books, cheery gift books – all things you’d want to give someone for, say, a holiday that’s coming up on you faster than a freight train. I’m holding a few back for the holidays, but some are just too good to keep from you for one more moment.

Just promise me you won’t let the shortage of traditional page-turners deter you – whatever their genre, more than a few of these books are just begging to be read cover to cover.   Read on

must reads: august

I’ve realized summer is for books what fall is for television. There are an impossible number of truly fantastic titles in my review pile this month. So many, in fact, that I’ve been putting off this post because I quite honestly didn’t know where to start, or how to narrow my list. I’ve managed it, but it was quite the hat trick…and it’s still long. Luckily, you still have a few weeks left of those long, sun-drenched days, and I’m determined to help you spend as many of them as possible stretched out on a chaise lounge, reading a new book you can’t put down.  Read on

the how-to: 15 minutes to a happier closet

Beautiful closet, clean closet, organize closet, how to clean your closet

We don’t talk enough about the realities of fashion, do we? The difference between “them” (those gorgeous stylesetters you admire endlessly on Pinterest) and “us” (who are openly thrilled when we manage to successfully assemble an outfit with more than two components). But the chasm can feel wide. How is it that “they” make themselves look so fantastic, so often? I’ll tell you. Read on

asked and answered: what to wear with leather?

Yay, reader question! Being answered in a timely fashion! I’m pretty proud of myself. Amy asked such a great question over the weekend, I had no choice but to answer straightaway:

All the leather out there reminds me of my unresolved question from last fall: how do you match leather tops/skirts to boots? Do we avoid leather boots completely? Do the boots need to match the color of the leather top/jacket/skirt? If not boots, then what kind of footwear, especially in the colder months? Thanks! ~ Amy

Amy, you’re so not the only one wondering about this. Matching leather is a hurdle it took me years to master – and finally, I realized I was worrying too much (as usual). In general, the only rules I stick to are these: Read on
