beauty buzz: shades of spring

i’m not one to change my makeup shades with the spring…the truth is that i’m really a ‘spring colors’ girl year-round.  but my nails?  another story entirely.  i always fall hard for the latest and greatest spring shades, and i’ve found a few that are definitely going to be my new go-to favorites this year.

i tried hard to love lavender this year (it’s been showing up in just about every fashion mag), but to be honest, it’s tricky to find a shade that reads refined. most end up looking a bit like you borrowed your little sister’s polish, which is less than ideal, to say the least.

normally, i err on the side of caution, opting for a classic pale, sheer pink – no muss, no fuss.  but this year, i’m branching out a bit….to peach.  groundbreaking, i know.  but a girl can’t live on sheer pinks alone. and when the sun comes out, peach looks amazing with a tan.

my picks for the season?  OPI’s “sand in my suit” is a gorgeous, slightly opalescent, peachy beige. normally, i shy away from anything with shimmer, but because this color is so very subtle, i think it actually works perfectly.  designer jason wu even used this shade for his spring fashion shows, in case you need proof of its versatility.

i’m also loving the newest shade from deborah lippman, “i’m not innocent”.  this one’s better suited to those of us with pale skin…it’s more peach than beige (the photo makes it look pink-ish, but trust me…it’s peach), and is just perfectly simple and pretty.  (also, a little tricky to track down. i did manage to find it at amazon, though it’s sold out at lippmann’s website.)

if you’re less boring than me, and looking for something a little more on-trend (though i have to tell you, nudes are huge this spring!), i also love lippman’s “waking up in vegas”.  it’s a matte grey with the perfect lavender undertone, which keep your fingers from looking like you’re fresh from the mortuary (a personal peeve with some of the grey polishes).  it’s subtle enough for day, but definitely hip enough for going out (ie, you won’t have to re-paint your nails before you go to work the next morning!).

and, for toes…well, anything goes, of course (except blue.  please, no more blue polish!).  but i’m looking forward to toting OPI’s “lucky, lucky lavender” along for my next pedicure.  it’s as bright and springy a color as you can get…sort of a lavender/pink hybrid.  again, great for tan skin, and i can’t wait to show it off with all of those sandals i’ll be sporting!

pretty in pink

i swear, the color theme this week was totally unintentional.  but i couldn’t let october go by without showing you a few things i’m loving in support of breast cancer awareness (BCA) month.

as you probably know, each october, virtually every designer and beauty line under the sun releases a limited-edition pink item in support of breast cancer.  breast cancer blenders, breast cancer flat irons, even breast cancer soap…the options are endless.  in each case, anywhere from a nickel to 100% of the proceeds go to fund research for a cure.  always one to shop for a cause, i thought i’d show you a few of my favorites.  fair warning: i do tend to lean toward the products that donate most or all proceeds to charity – giving $5 from a $200 item doesn’t do much for me.  after all, if you’re shopping for warm fuzzies, you might as well go all out!

i loved this necklace before i even knew it was for BCA.  gorgeous gunmetal chain, and i am crazy for that rose gold feather – so unique, perfect for everyday wear, and really reasonable at $75.  it was designed by elizabeth and james, and is available exclusively at shopbop.

every year, OPI releases a special shade of pink for BCA, and this year’s “pink of hearts” is a personal favorite of mine.  it works as a one-coat sheer (though it’s a little brighter than my usual ‘samoan sand’), but is also great full-strength.  it’s a sweet, preppy pink that goes with anything.  and it’s only $6 at amazon!

these flamingo notecards from linda & harriett are so cute, i had to share.  they just make me think of happier, tropical places – i’d love to send them out to friends right about now, when we’re struggling to remember those warm summer days.  you get 6 cards for $14, and 20% of proceeds go to a cancer center in new york.

this one’s pretty cute:  bambako is a headband designer, and has come up with seven different designs for BCA – each named for a breast cancer survivor the designer knows.  plus, a whopping 100% of proceeds go to the susan g. komen foundation!  personally, i’m partial to the feathered ‘rue’ band, but i could definitely see the ‘gloria’ and ‘rhoda’ being darling for holiday fetes.

and last but not least, i can’t resist a cute pair of PJ’s, especially when i know it’s for a good cause.  i love the bright pink and yellow flowers on this set by sleepyheads (on sale for $36), but they have a whole “shop for the cure” section of their site.  any item you find there will get you a 10% donation to breastcancer.org.  sweet dreams indeed!

if you have the cash, this is a great month – and a great excuse – to spend.  besides, who doesn’t need a little pink in their life? if you’ve come across any great BCA products, drop a comment and let us all know…the more ways to spend, the better for everyone!

what i want today: gorgeous summer nails

one of my favorite things about summer is that i get to break out my favorite bright nail colors (toes only, thank you!).  since i spend more time than is at all rational debating the merits of various shades, i thought the least i could do is share the fruits of my labor by letting you in on my favorite classic colors for summer.

when it comes to fingers, i’m all about neutrals – and i’ve been wearing opi’s “samoan sand” since the day it arrived.  i love that it’s sheer and goes with everything, but the hint of brown makes it more subtle and sophisticated than my usual sheer pinks.

this summer, everyone’s been talking about chanel’s “facets d’or” gold polish.  and it’s lovely, no doubt.  but i’ve been completely sucked in by “splendeur”, a fantastic shade that goes on fuschia, and dries to the perfect raspberry pink/red hybrid.  plus, there’s just something lovely and girly about wearing chanel – even when it’s nail color.  splendeur has been my go-to all summer.

for a more fun, girly hot pink shade, i’ve been loving “i’m indi-a mood for love” from opi’s fantastic new india collection.  to be honest, i love just about every shade in this line – it’s well worth spending some time with.

if you’re more into reds, chanel’s “dazzling” is that rarer-than-rare flattering orange-red.  what they lack in quantity of color choices, chanel always makes up for in quality.  literally every shade i’ve tried is gorgeous, and i’ve never used polish that’s stayed on my nails longer, which makes it well worth the $20 pricetag in my book.

last but not least, metallics are always tricky for me, but chanel’s new “kaleidoscope” (not yet available online) is the best shade i’ve found, hands down (no pun intended).  it varies from a warm green gold to deep grey to liquid silver, depending on the light.  it’s surprisingly neutral, and is a warm enough tone that it won’t keep you from wearing gold jewelry.  opi’s “charmed by a snake” is a very close second…the shade is this amazing bronzy brown/pink shade that’s so beautiful, i might even give it a try on my fingers when the weather cools down.

what about you?  what’s your go-to shade for summer?
