editor’s picks: nordstrom anniversary sale 2014

Psstโ€ฆLooking for details on the 2017 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale? Iโ€™ve got the scoop right here. |

It’s here, friends: Early Access for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale starts now! As always, I’m sharing my picks of the best (and the worst) from the Sale – time to start shopping!

First up, the designer goods. If you weren’t one of the lucky campers that scored the designer insert in your Sale catalog, don’t fret. There were only a few goodies worth mentioning:

MaxMara Haway notch-collar coat, $929 |  Rag & Bone Devon bootie, $349 | Rag & Bone Melinda knit biker jacket, $299

A word about that MaxMara coat, before you get too excited – while it looks like an overcoat in the insert, I got a peek at it in-store. It’s actually very lightweight, more officewear than outerwear. The website is calling it a “cardigan jacket”.

For me, the best designer pieces weren’t featured in the catalog. A few of my favorites:

Burberry-palooza! Burberry London double-breasted trench, $839 | Tumblebridge peacoat, $598 | Quilted puffer, $479

Burberry House Check aviators, $159 | 3.1 Philip Lim Pashli satchel (exclusive colors), $652 |
Rag & Bone Camden tee, $99 | Equipment Sloane crewneck sweater, $178

Other than the designer picks, I wasn’t wild about a lot of the apparel options in the Sale catalog. But as always, things change dramatically once you take a look in-store. So far, here’s what’s on my list:

Rebecca Taylor lace & tweed dress, $283 | Rag & Bone Chamberlain military jacket, $159 |
Woven Heart hooded sweater coat, $38

Pants are always a tricky business, but I’m cautiously optimistic. There’s a 5% chance these Eileen Fisher pants will work, but if they do, hallelujah – stretchy pants for the office! (Size down, of course.) And besides the usual denim suspects from Paige and J Brand, I’m curious about this black moto jean from NYDJ, which I’m hoping will have a more reasonable rise than the Rag & Bone version tends to. And if you haven’t scored a great boyfriend yet, these from Kut have a pretty perfect fit.

Eileen Fisher slim pants, $149 | NYDJ AMI skinny moto jeans, $79 | Kut from the Kloth Catherine boyfriend jean, $52

Boots are always a highlight of the Sale – it’s a great time to nab Frye boots, which rarely go on sale (especially for those of you with those badass athletic calves, since Nordstrom stocks so many wide calf boots as well). And this year, there are some great options from Cole Haan and Paul Green as well, plus a Sam Edelman short boot I promise you everyone will be wearing this fall, for better or worse.

Cole Haan Arlington tall boot (also in brown), $264 | Sam Edelman Pembroke, $129 |
Frye Molly tall boot, $279 |  Frye Phillip riding boot, $259

Paul Green Ally moto boot, $326 | Sam Edelman Pacific bootie, $99 | Frye Anna shortie boot, $218

As usual, it’s slim pickings for shoes other than boots. But there are some promising Tory Burch, Coach and Cole Haan flats, and for the first time ever, I’m being swayed by a pair of AGLs. The patent/black combo is really sleek, and I love the updated take on their signature buckle, which was wearing a little thin.

AGL Bella flat, $199 | Tory Burch Eloise flat, $179

In the bag department, there’s an impressive selection of work-ready totes this year. Unless you’re bold enough to go for the black & white snakeskin version, I’d skip the Rebecca Minkoff totes (which everyone will be carrying in a month). Instead, go for the Michael Kors Jet Set tote, which also comes in a gorgeous pearl grey and classic luggage tan, and is a great staple at a bargain price. And speaking of jetsetting, an expandable Longchamps tote is maybe the best idea ever!

Michael Michael Kors Jet Set tote, $151 | Rebecca Minkoff MAB Tote, $263 |
Longchamp expandable Le Pliage tote, $126

There are always some great jewelry finds in the Sale – this year, they’ve included Lana Jewelry, a new favorite of mine. And if costume’s what you’re after, there are some impressive bargain picks that look infinitely pricier than they are.

nordstrom-anniversary-sale-jewelryMelinda Maria ‘Carrie’ 3-bangle stack, $118 | Cara nail bangle, $17 |
Nadri pavรฉ hinged bangle, $59 | Lana Jewelry triangle lariat, $398

Then of course, there’s athletic wear. I’ll be stocking up on Zella leggings as always, plus a pair or two of Nikes. These Internationalists have that old-school thing I love, but I keep meaning to try a pair of Air Max for a change. And I’m in the mood for a serious lingerie refresh, so I’ll be stocking up on Hanky Panky, perhaps a few of these Shimera boyshorts, and a few new bras. My favorite Natori Feathers bra is included in the Sale again this year, but it may be time for a change – perhaps this one from Wacoal?

And last but not least, beauty buys! I was thrilled to see my favorite Clarins UV Plus 40 sunscreen included in the sale, so I’ll be nabbing a duo of those right away. MAC has some really gorgeous sets available from $39, but for me, it’s tough to beat the Bobbi Brown Nude on Nude collection: mascara, liner, and 12 eyeshadow shades I’ll actually use.

Jo Malone cologne collection, $88 | MAC Look in a Box, $39 |
Bobbi Brown Nude on Nude, $85 | Clarins UV Plus HP SPF 40, $60 for 2

So, that’s what’s on my list…but tell me: what are you shopping for?

I bought one of those Wacoals on sale earlier this year and I love it – really great fit, although the straps are kind of wide-set. Worth checking out for sure. I also love wearing that style of boyshorts under skirts and dresses – saves you from a Duchess of Cambridge moment. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Great preview, thank you! Those Sam Edelman short boots are *very* cute!

My new Nordstrom card arrived yesterday, so I’m practicing the “buy now, filter later” mantra!

Anyone else having problems with the website? Whenever I try to go to the second page in any category it takes me back to all items on sale.

Thanks for this awesome summary! ๐Ÿ™‚ I love the DVF wrap dresses as well and the philip lim bags. Argh – so tempting!

You’re swayed by AGLs for the first time ever? ๐Ÿ™‚ Maybe I’m too old lady but I swear by them. Most comfortable flats EVER. I’ve worn them walking around cobblestone streets in Europe and at work and I think with the right outfit it can look good going out, too ๐Ÿ™‚

Nicole: It was working for me around 1 am (glutton for punishment that I am, LOL). Did you get everything sorted?

DL: I know!! I’m such a late AGL convert. I think it was that darn buckle, which made them a dead ringer for my trusty London Soles from way back. Now that it’s gone, I’m ready to get on board!

DL – my Nordstrom SA says that AGL signed Taylor Swift as a spokesperson, so they are about to be officially acceptable for us under-50 types. (I have three pairs, btw. ;))

I love how honest you are ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m looooooving the skinny moto jeans from NYDJ and might need to snag a pair!!

Oh…I so wish this sale was in Canada! That $38 sweater coat looks far more expensive…I guess the proof will be in seeing it in person. And I love your jewelry picks!

I always mean to pick up a Burberry on sale, but here in Canada, when spring and Fall last approxmately 8 days in total, it never really makes sense. What i would love to see (and i realize that July is certainly not the time to ask for it) is a compilation of the best investment winter coats – particularly down parakas. Those that are made from 100% goose down, but are still stylish and slimming. This seems to be impossible to find, but I am determined. I remember seeing a grey and yellow Stella McCartney one a couple of years ago that stole my heart…should have nabbed it!

Yup, got the Rag & Bone jacket. My stylist had pulled it for me, and I really fell in love with it. Hadn’t really noticed it in the catalog. Way cool. Will probably be back before the sale is over. Is anything even left on August 1? lol

kipkat: What a nice thing to say! You’re right: no sugar-coating here – SMC readers are a discerning bunch, and I want to make sure they have the real scoop ๐Ÿ™‚

Roxy: Nordstrom really doesn’t ship to Canada?! That is crazy! So unfair. And as for investment-worthy winter coats, I definitely have some ideas, so – noted! (But feel free to remind me in the fall, when more options are out there.)

Tammy: Ooh, you did? The knit or the military? I loved both – great options this year, I thought. And I did hear that this year, they at least held back a full size run of everything that was in the catalog for when the sale officially launches on the 18th. So, at least a few people will be able to snag those goods!

The NYDJ motos are kind of awesome, although they are definitely regular rise. Between those and the EIleen Fisher pants, I am ready for Medicare and Social Security!
