foodie finds: meet quin

Quin Candy, candy portland, quin portland, candy shop

For those of you that haven’t guessed, I have a pretty serious sweet tooth. In fact, one of my fantasy careers has always been to own a candy shop. I’d be like Dylan Lauren…but probably about 50 lbs heavier from being around all that Cadbury (and, sadly, without the billion-dollar family legacy and a private yurt).

But I’m also a food snob. So, while I’ll certainly dig into an Oreo from time to time, it’s really the handmade goodies that make my heart sing. I’m what you’d charitably call a decent baker, but I’ve always dreamed of mastering the art of candymaking. Candy is as much chemistry as culinary art, and since even my college chem professor agreed I was a disaster in that particular field, I’ve always been openly in awe of those who do it well.

All this to say that when I got word Jami Curl (she of massive local fame for perfecting what is, quite simply, the best cupcake in Portland) had opened a chic new candy shop in town, my ears perked up. And when she told me that, instead of stocking the usual pre-produced fare, she was making her wares from scratch? I went from interested to obsessed in a hurry.

friday finds: summer projects

Happy Friday, friends! Well, it’s happened: we’ve come to that time in the summer when the days are long, and my ambition is high. I have so many summer projects brewing in my tired little brain, it will be a real miracle if I can settle down long enough to make one or two of them happen. Specifically? I’m so glad you asked. foodie finds: the best new cookbooks I can’t stop reading

While I may not love summer fashion, it’s hands-down my favorite season for cooking. Mountains of fresh fruit and veg at every farmer’s market, light summer pastas, pizza on the grill, making pesto out of just about anything…it’s exactly what I want to be cooking (and eating) all year long, but it’s just so easy in the summertime. This is the time of year when I let my CSA box dictate what’s on the menu for dinner, and honestly, I think I love the challenge of it. “Okay, gypsy peppers…what would one do with these?”

All this to say you’ll have to indulge my culinary wanderings a bit more this time of year. Because I’m devouring new cookbooks (and ingredients) as quickly as you’d chow down a plate of my homemade kale chips. My current favorites? I’m so glad you asked. Read on

foodie finds: greenpan barcelona wok

Here’s a little something you don’t know about me: I’m a total kitchen equipment snob. I can spend just as much time in a Williams-Sonoma as I do at Nordstrom (okay, sometimes more). I have dreams in which I get the chance to have a total “do-over” on my wedding registry, and it’s nothing but All-Clad and Le Creuset as far as the eye can see. But the one snob-worthy piece of cookware I’ve never been able to track down? The perfect nonstick pan.

We all need them, no matter what those Food Network chefs make you think (oh, to have their team of kitchen minions, ready and waiting to scrub their little fingers to the bone cleaning piles of stainless steel skillets). But most nonstick pans are ugly, flimsy and temperamental. Can’t go in the oven, can’t use metal utensils, can’t cook at high temperatures. They’re temporary by their very nature – after a few months, those nonstick surfaces aren’t what they used to be, and in a year or two, the surface starts to fleck off in your eggs, and you’re stuck replacing the whole pan.

But I’m changing my tune, friends, because this gorgeous GreenPan wok is officially my new favorite kitchen toy. Read on

get gifting: foodie finds

If there’s anything I love as much as shopping, it’s food. Eating out, cooking in, buying totally unnecessary specialty equipment (wait, that’s technically shopping…) – however you slice it, I have a serious culinary side. So I like to think I have a special knack when it comes to picking out gifts for the foodie on your list. Believe me when I tell you there’s not a thing on this list I wouldn’t swoon to see under my tree. Except possibly that Shun knife, but only because I already have one (trust me: it will change your life).

family time is cocktail time

It’s almost time, friends. Time for the family to descend en masse, time for turkey and pie and stuffing and…well, sky-high piles of dirty dishes. But I digress.

What do we most need to get us through this four-day family extravaganza? Well, a spirit of thankfulness wouldn’t hurt. Even a cynic like me would do well to remember occasionally that I’m much better off than millions of other people. I have a roof, a full fridge, a fuller closet, and people who love me. That’s quite a lot, really.

What else do we need? Cocktails. Because I don’t know about you, but my family is generally much more pleasant to be around after we’ve all had a nip or two.

get gifting: cozy fall treats

Jennefer T. ~ Fall is such a cool time of the year, in more ways than one. I no longer have to worry about wearing my burqa-esque swimsuit cover-up, the kids are back in school, and I finally get to begin planning (without guilt or being mocked) the six-week extravaganza I call the holidays.

With fall also comes the urge to stay in, light fires, buy pumpkins and – despite my knowing it will all come home to roost in January when my cholesterol skyrockets and my pants pop open – eat and drink. What better way to kick off this season than with a few edible, drinkable and servable gifts for surprising your loved ones, party hosts or most importantly, treating yourself!
