friday finds

i have to say, i love these ‘friday finds’ posts…they really do turn out as random as my week typically seems.

these beautiful new chocolate bars from vosges chocolate showed up on my doorstep this week (i love my job!), and wow.  a belt notch later, i can tell you they’re positively amazing.  vosges makes some of my favorite chocolates – they do an amazing job of creating seriously unique, unbelievably delicious flavors.  the pink peppercorns in the white chocolate/lemon zest bar might have been a tad strong, but utterly unlike anything i’ve tried. and there’s nothing at all wrong with blood orange caramel!  count me in.  next on my list to try is their new bacon chocolate chip pancake mixyum!

i ran into this skirt from the tucker for target collection during a target outing this week, and dear readers, it is utterly fantastic in person!  i am now scouring my local targets to find my size, as it’s totally sold out online (reviewers have said it runs small, so beware).  this gold and navy brocade looks so, so much more luxe in person than it gets credit for being online.  it reminds me of something j.crew or kate spade would have produced, but the $39 pricetag is no lie.  wear it now with a drapey silk top and navy belted blazer, or a sleek cream cardi…and just try to imagine the holiday potential here!

speaking of j.crew, i was actively coveting one of the chunky bracelets from their fenton/fallon collaboration, but it sold out before i could justify the expense.  lucky for me their sister brand, madewell, has come up with a style i might even love more…and at half the price!  at $58, i’m having a very hard time finding the willpower to stop myself.

and last but not least, couldn’t resist sharing the friends & family action going on at hayden+harnett.  now through october 15, take 20% off any online order (including sale items, and pieces from other designers!) with code FALL10FRIENDS.  i checked with their designer, toni hacker, before i shared, and she assured me that she thinks of all you shoppingsmycardio readers as dear friends of hayden+harnett, so spend away!  i’d splurge on these tomtom pyramid stud earrings ($80) and the mystery scarf ($160), but i haven’t even gotten to the bags yet…

have a great weekend, everyone!

sample sale alert: hayden-harnett & friends

if you’re in the market for a new bag (and really, readers, when are we not in the market?), hayden-harnett’s sample sale starts this morning!  and believe me – these people know how to do a sample sale right, which means there are some serious bargains to be had.  plus, they’ve teamed up with few of their favorite accessory designers to add even more extreme-sale goodies to the pot.  the sale runs online from today through wednesday (july 13-15), but i’d suggest buying fast…hayden-harnett has some pretty devoted fans.

sigh.  so many pretties, so little time…

friday finds

i’m not even going to pretend there’s rhyme or reason to this week’s list.  try to just sit back and enjoy the randomness of it all.

i came across some earrings by gabriela artigas in a magazine this month, became obsessed, tracked her down, and am now coveting at least half of her line.  she makes some of the most unique, edgy and wearable pieces i’ve seen in ages, but this vintage art deco sterling spheres necklace ($320) is by far my favorite. it has that perfect mix of hip and timeless, and i simply can’t think of an outfit this wouldn’t improve. time to start that birthday wish list, i think…

i’ve been dying to test out the latest from relastin, but had a weird fixation on finishing up my last moisturizer before i cracked this one open.  readers, i have no idea why i waited so long.  much like my obsession with their eye silk, the skin revitalizer has this texture that’s just indescribably luxe…kind of silky, and thoroughly indulgent.  if i were a millionaire, i’d use it head to toe.  it’s perfect for summer, as it’s not the least bit greasy or over-moisturizing.  and, looks like it’s on sale at amazon for $40! trust me…you so want to try this one.

stuart & wright is having a serious sale right now, if you’re into the hipster lines like a.p.c. and acne.  as i’m usually not, i was about ready to pass this one by until i spied these handmade sandals by ariana bohling, now marked down to the realm of the reasonable. decisions, decisions.  (incidentally, if you’re of the smaller foot set, check out the sale on ndc’s equally lovely summer sandals too.)

and last but not least, this tote from hayden-harnett is just singing my song this week.  the tie-dye-ish chevron print is so fresh next to everyone else’s same old stripes, and i love that this has just a bit more structure than your typical summer tote.  plus, it doesn’t hurt that the line’s designer is an absolutely lovely human being…but you’ll be hearing more on that later.

have a great weekend, all…see you back here next week!

summer essential: the overnighter

i started digging through the dusty nether-regions of my bookmarks folder to write this, oh, maybe two hours ago.  now, i’m thoroughly bleary-eyed and exhausted, but i found what i was looking for!

in my opinion, few summer essentials are as overlooked as the overnight bag.  when the beach is the destination (or somewhere equally relaxed and inviting), i get weighed down just thinking about carting my ancient roller bag along for the ride.  there’s just something about summer travel that makes me want to throw “responsible” to the wind, and use a bag i’ll really love for my vacation.

picture-5

i’ve been testing out the new patent-finish collection from lesportsac, and i’m fairly convinced this might be the most durable bag ever made.  first, it’s h-u-g-e…you’ll definitely get your carry-on max with this baby.  the straps are padded and comfy enough for even heavy loads, and lesportsac’s normally-impermeable nylon is made even more indestructible with a hearty patent coating on the exterior.  so, when that mean flight attendant insists you shove your carry-on into an overhead compartment, you won’t need to fantasize about pushing her off the plane.  if you’re classic, grab it in black, but i kind of like the posey for summer fun (better pic here).  plus it zips flat…so it doubles as a “i bought too many souvenirs” emergency stowaway.

i can’t think of a single thing by angela adams that doesn’t make me swoon with delight.  i am not at all kidding when i say it’s my dream in life to own one of her amazing rugs (later in life…when i don’t have dogs that will puke their guts out all over it).  for now, i’ll happily settle for this sweet weekend tote ($145), which reminds me of a classic ll bean tote, but so much more chic.  it’s  packed full of pockets, and made of super-durable cotton canvas (hand-printed, by the way).  doesn’t it just make you think of a summer weekend in nantucket?

and last but not least, hayden-harnett is always a classic for chic travel options (their ibiza flight tote is a legend).  i’m dying to get my hands on their new avion tote ($318).  with leather handles and a chic paule marrot fabric pattern, this one is made even more perfect by being laptop-friendly – and, while i don’t condone working on a vacation, how else are you going to get your cardio poolside?

hayden-harnett goes punk

i admit – these are pretty far from my normal prep-tastic tastes.  every time i try to pull off punk, i just end up feeling old.  but for some reason, these studded leather cuffs from hayden-harnett are just rubbing me the right way.  i love the ’80s vibe, which is just subtle enough to work perfectly.  and i love the color combos.  that purple/black version is my fave, but the brandy/gold is a close second.  if the cuff isn’t really your style, the ramone is a slimmer version that buckles on – so you wear it like a watch.  it reminds me an awful lot of an hermes medor watch, but with a little more edge (and a much smaller pricetag).  if you’re looking for more subtle still, check out the celina, which feels a bit like a very hip, very updated id bracelet.

accessories like these are a new venture for hayden-harnett, a line i sometimes think of more for the younger fashionistas among us.  but i love this new direction – it’s sophisticated enough to let your inner punk come out, without compromising on chic.  if this keeps up, i’m going to have to start investigating the rest of the line!

whichever style you’re feeling, you can snag one for $80-90 over at HH’s website – a steal once you see the fantastic leather quality and design detail on these.  these are definitely high on my list for hot spring accessories!

luxe or less: marni vs. target

we’re going to be talking a lot about florals in the next couple of weeks…after all, it’s spring, and florals are a perennial stand-by for the season.  but this year, the styling is a lot more hip and nontraditional…which i’m loving.  these bags are a great case in point.  i love the abstract leaf patterns, and they’re a great twist on a classic floral, which can get a little laura ashley.  (i do, however, love taking a really traditional floral pattern and mixing it with an ultra-mod design…something along the lines of this fab charlotte ronson dress, or that steven alan top we talked about.)

either of these bags would be a great way to bring a little of that hot spring floral into your life – i’d add one to a winter-friendly ensemble like slacks and a blouse to warm things up a bit.  your choice:  left is marni, $600 at net-a-porter; right is hayden-harnett, $49.99 at target.

so, which one would you choose:   luxe or less?

the best-laid plans….and some cheap thrills

i know, i said there would be some after-christmas-sale mentions at the very least over the last week.  and, well, there haven’t been.  but, in my defense, let me just say the following:

1, the after-christmas sales not only sucked this year, they were basically nonexistent.  i’ve decided everyone marked things down before christmas instead, so the after-christmas sales were that much more anti-climactic (less climatic? damn double-negatives).

2, do you ever get to the point that you’ve just shopped and shopped and shopped, and can shop no more?  i know…hard to imagine.  but i’m there.  and i needed to not shop for 5 minutes.  fortunately for all of you, i’m back on the horse…and have some lovely things to share next week, as well as a “top buys of 2008” post i’ll be sharing in the next few days, if i can get my act together.

3, on a personal level…well, the best way i can explain the past week is to send you off to read this.  yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

BUT, since this is, first and foremost, a shopping blog (and therefore, 95% of you care not a bit about my adventures in miscreant canines), i will remind you all that the thakoon for target collection hit stores over the weekend, and it’s actually the first go international collection i’ve liked since paul & joe.

i’m heavily in the market for patterned tees in anticipation of spring.  cardigans will be everywhere, and i seem to have become the official cardigan queen of the west coast, but i’m getting tired of all the monochrome in my wardrobe.  so, i’ll be stocking up on some fantastic floral and striped tees to layer underneath (particularly this one, which i anticipate aggressively stalking at local stores, since i was an idiot and did not buy it online before it was gone).  also, i have it on good authority that this floral trench is even cuter in person, which means it has serious potential to make the cut as my spring jacket.

(for the record, the hayden-harnett target collection was released as well….it’s generally disappointing, though i’m sort of curious about this print canvas version of their classic flight bag.  it has the potential to be a great carry-on, as it’s stylish and fun, but you won’t care a bit when the flight attendant forces you to jam it into the overhead compartment.)

happy new year’s eve, everyone!
