They joke that their home address is the Chicago O’Hare International airport, their Instagram feed is peppered with exotic locations and impromptu road-trips, and most of their stories start with “When I was in…” . Even if you can’t pinpoint their last known location, here are a list of gifts that any frequent traveler will love to receive…once they’re back in town. Read on

a currently coveting compendium

Lately, it seems my Pinterest boards runneth over with goodies I (at least momentarily) can’t live without. Quite possibly, all of this way-too-early holiday business has seeped into my subconscious and I’m formulating lists for Santa against my will. Whatever the reason, in no particular order, and with zero rhyme and reason, I thought I’d share a few things I can’t get over this week. Read on

this just in: memorial day sales

gelato

Gratuitous glamour shot of my favorite gelato from Florence. Because, you know, Memorial Day? Summer? Ice cream!

Friends, I don’t know about you, but the Memorial Day sales are threatening to bankrupt me take over my inbox. And so, I thought it might be time for a holiday weekend round-up of the best that have crossed my path so far. As always, I’ll add new ones to the top of the list as I get the word, and of course if you see any sales we should know about, share them in the comments. Crowd-sourced steals are where it’s at!

gift guide: toni & ben’s finds for the hip couple

{Editor’s Note: This year, I’ve asked a few of the people whose style I spend all year admiring to share their holiday wish lists. Stay tuned – we’ll have a new expert every day for the next two weeks!} gift guide couple

Here’s one of the (many) ways I can tell I’m not hip: while reading Toni Hacker and Ben Harnett’s guide to everything a hip couple could possibly want, I kept intermittently exclaiming “What in the world is that?”…followed closely by “Dang, that’s so cool!” (I mean, really….kinetic sand?) But that’s exactly what I’d expect from the brains behind one of my favorite handbag and accessory lines, Hayden-Harnett. These two Brooklynites just can’t help but be hip! Whether you’re looking for one gift you can give to that couple you double-date with every Saturday, creative ideas for your other half, or a few things for your own wish list, Toni and Ben have come up with a dozen finds guaranteed to put you on the short list for Most Popular Couple.

the how-to: weekend casual

Weekend style is a tricky business. All you want to do is spend 48 hours in sweats and see how long you can get away with not showering, but then you remember that you do still have to spend time in the world and look remotely put together. Luckily, as a girl who spends most of her days blogging on the couch and having meetings via Skype, “weekend” casual (who am I kidding? I’m wearing this most weekdays as well.) is an art I’ve pretty well perfected.

These picks aren’t hypothesis – each and every one of these pieces is 100% road-tested, and it’s safe to say I’m wearing at least 3 of the 5 on any given Sunday. I’m telling you, just add a great scarf and you’re done.

what i’m wearing: shades of grey

Until fall’s in full swing, I’m doing my best to straddle the seasons by adding a few doses of grey to my usual warm-weather wardrobe. Dark charcoal feels like a bit much while the sun’s still beating down on me, but paler shades are the perfect transitional hue. Plus, they play as well with pastels as they do with black, so they’re worthy investments that will see you through the coming months in plenty of style.

on my radar: stylyt

I got the sweetest email not so long ago from the founders of Stylyt, and I loved their concept so much, I had to share. On the site, members submit ideas for new designs they’d like to see from a select group of labels. The rest of the members vote, and the winning ideas actually get produced and sold on Stylyt. So, if you love those signature Hayden-Harnett studded cuffs, for instance, but always wished for a different color combo? Done!

But my heart really sings for these sweet little enamel pendants by Brandy Pham, a designer that’s the darling of style blogs these days. Done up in rose gold (you know I can never resist rose gold), you can go for the girly ribbon bar pendant, with a bit of sparkle thanks to the glittered enamel, or the slightly edgier thorn pendant with milky white enamel. Both do a great job of standing alone, but are also pretty perfect for layering (especially the thorn, which I think is just begging to be paired with a classic pearl necklace for fall). And the prices are fantastic – $88 for a beautifully-made, wear-with-anything piece that none of your friends will have? Done.

I can’t possibly choose. Do you have a favorite?

Take a peek at Stylyt…I think you’ll love it as much as I do.

test case: the best black leggings

That’s right – no clever title, no beating about the bush. This post is a mission. It’s also ungodly long, so settle in.

For all of the shopping I do (and believe me, it’s a lot), I’ve never been able to find truly perfect basic black leggings. I’ve tried just about everything, but nothing hit the mark. Either it was a ponté knit that pilled after a few wears, or a matte knit fabric that quickly looked worn and gross, or a fabric that looked too shiny and athletic, or it was too thin and showed more than it should. I’m pretty sure this makes me the Goldilocks of black leggings, but that’s okay.

All of this is compounded by the fact that…well, I don’t really believe in leggings. That is – let me say this loudly, and with gusto – leggings are not pants. No matter how many celebrities or 19-year-olds we see doing it, I have a real problem with any sartorial use of leggings in which my ass is that plainly visible to anyone. Sorry, but I need layers – or at least pockets, for the love of god – to cover that sh!t up.

But of course, the tunic-and-leggings pairing went out with the ’90s. So, what’s a girl to do when she wants to wear her PJs out into the world without being judged?
