I think we can all agree that the phrase “lazy summer” applies with particular accuracy to our beauty routines. Flat irons sound considerably less appealing than “beach hair” sprays (or just cramming your unwashed locks into a messy bun). And makeup? Friends, I wear my thirtysomething badge with pride (really, who among us would want to be 22 again?!), but there are times when the reality that I’m not the spring chicken I once was really comes home to roost. And that fantastic trip I took this spring was one such occasion. When I got back from Paris and gave you all my secret formula for how to dress like a French girl, so many of you asked if I could update it for warmer temps. And I totally get it – it is infinitely harder to look chic when it’s hot out. Layering isn’t an option, hemlines and humidity rise, and you end up spending the entire summer in a threadbare tee and a cotton skirt with an elastic waist. the five summer shoes you need (almost all under $100!)

Every year, as soon as summer hits, I look into my shoe closet and panic. The sandals I bought last year feel tired and overworked, and ever so slightly out of style…so, naturally, I start to shop. But lord, are there options this time of year! Inevitably, I get overwhelmed by the possibilities, and either end up with three times as many pairs as I need (and nowhere to store them), or I become paralyzed by indecision and end up with nothing. And then there’s the matter of every fashion magazine on the planet telling us to buy Birkenstocks and Tevas this season. Don’t get me started. (But seriously. Tevas?! Those French girls are laughing their chic little derrières off over this one, friends. I just know it.)

Instead of falling into old patterns, this year I took a step back (way, way back from the Birks) and thought about what a person actually needs to get through a summer. Read on →

Just because it’s summer, don’t think for a second that my scarf collection is on sabbatical. Frankly, I’m freezing darn near all the time – but there’s also that constant flow of A/C, chilly evening air and San Francisco’s highly unpredictable weather to contend with. Well, friends…this has been one of those weeks. I’m sorry to have been gone, but as penance, I hope you’ll accept this gorgeous 3.1 Phillip Lim Ryder bag, one of the many goodies marked 40% off today at Barneys. If you’ve been ogling it in my Instagram pics, now you can have your very own.

Honestly, this bag is the single best purchase I’ve made this year – I use it to the exclusion of just about every other bag I own. Though mine doesn’t have this badass embossing detail, it also wasn’t 40% off. And truthfully, I might love this one just a smidge more than the plain versions. After all, black bags need a little extra oomph, don’t you agree?
